Driving on greatness: Stretch of Interstate 80 wins asphalt award
If there's one thing that brings people together, it might be complaining about the roads. Potholes... bumps... cracks. It's easy to criticize.
But as we found out Thursday, Iowa really has something to celebrate. At least on one particular route.
A 4.23-mile stretch of Interstate 80, between the 176 and the 180-mile marker, is a nationally recognized pavement.
The Asphalt Pavement Alliance awarded the Iowa Department of Transportation a 2022 Perpetual Pavement Award: By Performance. Qualifications include being over 35 years old, never structurally failing, and demonstrating high excellence in design, construction, and value for the traveling public.
"I think it's great that the designers and the district and the contractors can get recognized for the excellent work that they've done, and I think that the longevity of this pavement is just really a testament to so many people's hard work that has gone into this roadway over the years,” Ashley Buss, bituminous materials engineer with Iowa DOT, said.
And It’s not only the experts who are impressed by the asphalt, locals, and travelers were impressed when they found out about this prestigious yet obscure honor.
“Well, Iowa has the best roads in the country, so we are really fortunate to be able to drive this every day,” Lori Elliott, of Grinnell said, “Oh yes, asphalt's great!"
"I thought it was the coolest road I ever road on! Get it?!" Amy Sheppard, a traveler on I-80 said.
