Six Democrats face off for Iowa House District 36
A tight race is shaping up in Des Moines for Iowa House District 36 with six Democrats running for the seat.
vlog asked every candidate why they're running and what they want to accomplish. Here's what they told us:
"I have a broad depth of experience and knowledge and what it takes. I want to introduce legislation right away that will address education, that will address the tax situation. I think it's really important that I have some of that background," Jack Porter said.
"I am running to get Iowa back on track. I want to make sure that we're investing in our public schools. I want to make sure that we are protecting reproductive freedom. That we are supporting workers in this state and that we're leading on climate. That's the Iowa that I want to live in," Shannon Henson said.
"Communicating these ideas out across rural Iowa, advocating for my community were things I was already doing and this was kind of a natural next step to escalate that and continue to use my skills and experience to help my state and my community," Chris Disbro said.
"Ideally, if I could wave a magic wand and have a majority in the house for example, I would be fighting for labor issues, Chapter 20, clean waterways —that's really important— and education," Gabriel De La Cerda said.
"I have a different lived experience than other candidates, the youngest candidate, the only Black candidate in this race, and I've already been doing the work in our communities to address these issues. I'm connected to our communities, I represent a younger generation that is ready to to be more involved and ready to actually make some change in our state," Jaylen Cavil said.
"I'm running because this is not the state that I grew up in. And we've been concerned about raising Javi here and this has kinda been the impetus for me trying to get our state back on track so this can be a good place to raise all of our families again," Austin Baeth said.
There is no Republican running for Iowa House District 36.
