Updated list of Iowa, Iowa State student-athletes charged in sports wagering investigation
Over a dozen current and former student-athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were implicated in connection with an investigation into illegal sports wagering. Uwazurike, who was drafted by the Denver Broncos, also placed wagers on NFL games in which he played.Uwazurike waived his preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Aug. 28. Arland Bruce IV, former Iowa football: Bruce is accused of placing approximately 132 bets while underage, including 19 on Iowa football games. He is accused of betting the "under" total points in two 2022 games, including Iowa vs. Northwestern on Oct. 29 in which Bruce recorded a pair of receptions for 19 yards. He did not participate in the Hawkeyes' game vs. Kentucky in which he is accused of betting the "under" total points. Owen O'Brien, Iowa football (student manager): O'Brien, a student manager with the Iowa football program, is accused of placing over 350 bets totaling over $3,047 while he was under the age of 21. He is accused of placing 11 wagers on Iowa sporting events, including three on Iowa football events during the 2022 season while he was a staff member.You can read the complaint here.DeShawn Hanika, Iowa State football: Hanika is accused of placing 288 total wagers, with 70 wagers being placed on Iowa State basketball events. Hanika is not accused of betting before the age of 21 or betting on any Iowa State football events. Charges against Hanika were dismissed in October when the state failed to indict him within the required 45-day window after he waived his right to a preliminary trial.Hanika announced his intention in December to transfer to Kansas for his final year of eligibility in 2024.Isaiah Lee, Iowa State football: Lee is accused of placing 115 wagers totaling over $885. Lee is accused of placing 21 wagers involving 12 Iowa State football events in which he played, including a "moneyline" wager on Texas to beat Iowa State on Nov. 6, 2021. While underage, Schuster placed 9 bets under his father's name on Iowa men's basketball events. Once he was 21, Schuster opened another account under his own name. Over a dozen current and former student-athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were implicated in connection with an investigation into illegal sports wagering.

Two student managers are also charged.

Hunter Dekkers, Iowa State football: The Cyclones' starting quarterback is accused of placing approximately 366 wagers, including 297 of which were placed before Dekkers turned 21. Enyi Uwazurike, former Iowa State football: Uwazurike is accused of placing approximately 801 online bets, four of which were on Iowa State football games. Two such bets were on games in which Uwazurike appeared — Iowa at Iowa State, and Kansas at Iowa State, both in 2021. Uwazurike, who was drafted by the Denver Broncos, also placed wagers on NFL games in which he played.

Uwazurike waived his preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Aug. 28. His arraignment is set for early September.
