Iowa State Fair vendor mourns loss of beloved team member
The Iowa State Fair is known for its bustling crowds, sizzling food stands, and hardworking vendors who create a sense of community among themselves. But for the team at JR's SouthPork Ranch, this year’s fair carries a somber tone as they mourn the loss of one of their own.
Riley Eldridge, a two-time Ranch Hand at JR's, was a familiar face at the Can Corral, serving cold drinks to fairgoers with her signature smile. Her absence is deeply felt by her coworkers and family members, including JR's owner, Brooks Reynolds.
“Riley was a two-time Ranch Hand here at JR's SouthPork Ranch,” Reynolds said. “Her mom is my first cousin.”
Earlier this year, Riley was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a rare disease for women under 40. Tragically, she died less than a week before the fair began. She was 22 years old.

“In February, we found out she had ovarian cancer. And sadly, she passed away a week ago,” Reynolds said.
The loss has hit home for many, including Caroline Reynolds, Riley’s second cousin.
“As just like a girl too — you don't usually get tested for ovarian cancer when you're 20 years old. So it's very scary,” Caroline said.
To honor Riley’s memory, employees at JR's are wearing pink ribbons over their hearts, a small but heartfelt tribute to their beloved coworker. Every time they pass by the Can Corral, they are reminded of the joy Riley brought to their team.
“Hopefully we can honor her memory as long as we're here at JR's SouthPork Ranch,” Reynolds said.
Looking ahead, Brooks Reynolds plans to remodel the Can Corral next year and rename it in Riley’s honor, ensuring her legacy lives on at the fair she loved so much.
