Iowa State's Tamatoa McDonough continues the Ivy League pipeline

Iowa State's Tamatoa McDonough continues the Ivy League pipeline
POWERED BY CARL’S AUTO GROUP. THESE IOWA STATE CYCLONES HAVE THE BRAWN AND THE BRAINS. vlog JEFF DUBROF WAS IN AMES WITH THE STORY. IOWA STATE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TAMATOA MCDONOUGH IS AS SMART AS HE IS TALENTED AT FOOTBALL. VERY SHARP, VERY INTELLIGENT. COMES IN, CAN LEARN THE DEFENSE, CAN LEARN THE OFFENSE. THAT’S BECAUSE HE’S A YALE GRADUATE WITH A POLITICAL SCIENCE DEGREE, AND HE’S THE SECOND IVY LEAGUE TRANSFER IN AS MANY YEARS TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR THE CYCLONES. LAST YEAR, IT WAS OFFENSIVE LINEMAN JALEN TRAVIS. SO IT BEGS THE QUESTION, WHY IVY LEAGUERS? I LIKE GUYS THAT ARE SMARTER THAN ALL OF US. SO YOU KNOW, THAT HELPS FIRST AND FOREMOST. IN HIS SENIOR SEASON AT YALE, MCDONOUGH RACKED UP SIX AND A HALF SACKS AND 27 TACKLES. DON’T LET THE ACADEMIC PRESTIGE FOOL YOU. I FEEL LIKE IVY LEAGUE FOOTBALL IS DEFINITELY SLEPT ON. YOU KNOW, IT’S A LOT OF GOOD PLAYERS IN THOSE CONFERENCES. THIS GUY IS A BALLER, AND HE’S SHOWN THAT SINCE STEPPING FOOT ON CAMPUS BACK IN MAY. EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT THOSE GUYS WERE HERE, THOSE GUYS, YOU CAN JUST VISIBLY SEE THEM GETTING BETTER. ALL OF THAT HARD WORK, ALL OF THAT SELF-BELIEF FROM TAMATOA MCDONOUGH CAME TO FRUITION. IT FINALLY PAID OFF ON SATURDAY IN THE CY-HAWK GAME WITH TWO PLAYS HE WILL NEVER FORGET. THE TWO GAME SEALING SACKS ON MARK GRONOWSKI. HIS GREAT PERFORMANCE EARNED HIM THE BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK. IT FEELS GREAT. I FEEL LIKE IT’S JUST A RESULT OF HOW HARD OUR DEFENSE PLAYED ON ON SATURDAY. GIVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET BACK THERE, YOU KNOW, GET THAT THOSE SACKS. MCDONOUGH IS THRIVING ON ONE OF FOOTBALL’S BIGGEST STAGES. HE’S GOT ALL THE PHYSICAL TRAITS AND THE PHYSICAL TOOLS TO BE REALLY, REALLY SPECIAL FOR THIS FOOTBALL TEAM. BUT I DON’T THINK HE’S RULING OUT A TRIP TO THE DEBATE STAGE ONCE, HANGING UP THE CLEATS FOR GOOD. WE’LL SEE. YOU KNOW, I’M NOT 100% SURE WHAT I WANT TO DO AFTER FOOTBALL, BUT I’M OPEN TO A LOT OF THINGS

He is the second player in as many years to transfer to Iowa State from an Ivy League school. Offensive lineman Jalen Travis made his way to Ames via Princeton. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell likes his players who can hit the guy lining up across from them as much as they like hitting the books.

"I like guys that are smarter than all of us," Campbell said.

During his senior season at Yale, McDonough recorded 6.5 sacks and 27 tackles.

Despite his academic background, McDonough emphasized the competitiveness of Ivy League football. "I feel like Ivy League football is really slept on; these teams in that conference are really good," he said.

And he is proving that in the Big 12. During the Cy-Hawk game, McDonough had the best game of his season, racking up back-to-back sacks to seal the game for Iowa State. His performance earned him the Big 12's defensive player of the week.

"It feels great, I feel like it's a result of how hard our defense played on Saturday to allow me to get back there and get those sacks," McDonough said.
