Debris pickup: Here's how cities are cleaning following the derecho
Cities continue to make arrangements for debris cleanup following the derecho that swept through Iowa on Monday.
The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain across the state, with winds gusting around 100 mph in parts of Iowa.
Additional information from metro cities will be added to the following list at it becomes available.
Ames
The city of Ames said it established self-haul drop-off and curbside pickup programs for tree debris.
Tree debris can be dropped at 308 East Ave. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 23.
Curbside pickup begins Monday and will continue until all debris is removed.
Property owners must place tree debris parallel to the curb. Debris must not be placed next to fire hydrants, electric transformers, etc. and should be cut in lengths of no more than eight feet long
Ankeny
Ankeny will provide a tree and branch drop off for Ankeny residents Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Prairie Ridge Aquatic Center.
Additionally, curbside pickup begins Wednesday. The city said it could take up to four to six weeks to pick up the entire city.
Participation is restricted to Ankeny residents living within the corporate city limits.

Clive
The city of Clive has already began in hard hit areas and will continue the process into next week.
Residents are asked to bring debris to the sidewalk and curb by 1 a.m. Monday.
Branches cannot exceed 18 inches in diameter or eight feet in length and must be placed parallel to the curb.

Des Moines
In Des Moines, Des Moines Public Works will waive the sticker requirement for branches at curbside pickup for the next two weeks.

Johnston
The city of Johnston will offer curbside tree and branch collection in addition to a drop-off location for storm debris.
Collections begin Monday and all material must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. that day.
Residents wishing to remove storm debris sooner can do so by dropping it off at Terra Park beginning Wednesday and continuing through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Norwalk
Norwalk's one-time curbside collection of storm-related tree branches begins Monday.
All debris must be placed out for collection by 6 a.m. that day.
Roll off dumpsters will become available at the Public Works facility beginning Friday and continuing through Aug. 27.

Urbandale
In Urbandale, residents can take advantage of free storm-related tree damage collection for items placed on curbs prior to Aug. 17.
Tree branches must be placed on the city right-of-way “parallel” to the curb. Branches cannot be larger that 18 inches in diameter or 12 feet in length.

West Des Moines
West Des Moines’ special one-time pickup begins Aug. 17.
Branches cannot exceed 18 inches in diameter or 8 feet in length and must be place parallel to the curb.
Crews will not collect items on private property.

Waukee
The city of Waukee said public works will remove storm debris through Aug. 17.
Trees must be placed in the public right-of-way for pickup and cannot exceed 10 feet in length.

Windsor Heights
Debris cleanup will begin in Windsor Heights Wednesday, according to a news release from the city. Pickup will begin in the area of University Avenue to Hickman Road, west of and including 70th Street.
Areas east of 70th to 63rd streets will be scheduled immediately following initial pickups.
Starting Wednesday, the city will distribute 1o free yard waste stickers per property owner for yard waste bags.
Stickers are available at city hall during regular businesses hours and residents will be asked to provide documentation of their property ownership.
