No. 11 Indiana gets late touchdown to beat Iowa, 20-15
THAT THERE’S ACTUALLY SEEDS INSIDE A PUMPKIN SEED. THAT’S A TRUE STORY. LET’S TALK ABOUT MAKING A STATEMENT. YOU WANT TO PROVE THAT YOU CAN HANG WITH THE TOP OF THE BIG TEN, A TEAM THAT MADE THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR. YOU WANT TO PROVE THAT YOU CAN BE THERE. WELL, HOW ABOUT YOU DO IT AGAINST INDIANA ON A BEAUTIFUL HOMECOMING SATURDAY? HAWKEYES WOULD HAVE TO CONTAIN THE CURRENT HEISMAN FRONTRUNNER, FERNANDO MENDOZA, EARLY IN THIS GAME, THOUGH IT LOOKED TO BE TOO TALL OF A TASK. MENDOZA A BEAUTY OF A TOSS TO OMAR COOPER. FOUR PLAYS INTO THE GAME. IT’S SEVEN. NOTHING AFTER AN EARLY IOWA PICK A MINUTE AND A HALF INTO THE GAME, DREW STEVENS WAS AUTOMATIC EARLY. WE’LL GET MORE TO THAT LATER. 40 YARD FIELD GOAL WITH SIX AND A HALF TO GO IN THE FIRST. GETS IOWA ON THE BOARD AT 7 TO 3. THE IOWA DEFENSE WAS NOT GOOD AGAINST RUTGERS TODAY. AGAINST INDIANA, THEY LOOKED MUCH BETTER ON FOURTH AND ONE. CALEB BLACK IS STUFFED. COHEN GETS TO THE BACKFIELD, FORCES THE TURNOVER ON DOWNS. MOMENTUM SWINGS TOWARDS THE HAWKEYES AND THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE. MARK GRONOWSKI IN AFTER A 73 YARD DRIVE. IT’S TEN SEVEN HAWKEYES. IT WOULD BE 10 TO 10 AT THE HALF AFTER AN INDIANA FIELD GOAL IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. WE WERE TIED AT 13 INDIANA WITH THE BALL UNDER FIVE MINUTES TO GO. PHIL PARKER’S DEFENSE NEEDING A STOP. THEY PRESSURE MENDOZA OVERTHROWS HIS MAN AND IT’S ZACH LUTMER WITH THE PICK. AND THERE HE GOES DEEP INTO INDIANA TERRITORY. KINNICK ROCKING, BUT NOT FOR LONG. THEY ARE SET UP FOR A FIELD GOAL. DREW STEVENS ALREADY MADE ONE ON THE AFTERNOON. THIS FROM 42 AND HE PUSHES IT LEFT GAME REMAINS TIED AT 13 AND INDIANA WOULD NOT BE HELD DOWN FOR LONG. THIRD AND TEN MENDOZA. THE QUICK SLANT TO ELIJAH SARRATT SLIPS ONE AND GONE 49 YARDS TO THE BIG BOX. KINNICK FALLS SILENT. INDIANA TAKES A 2013 LEAD AND THE BUILDING IS STUNNED. THE HAWKEYES ARE GOING TO WIND UP DROPPING A HEARTBREAKER. 20 TO 15 SNAPS, A SEVEN GAME HOME WINNING STREAK. AND FOR MORE, LET’S SEND IT OUT TO SCOTT REISTER. THIS PLACE WAS ABSOLUTELY ROCKING. THE FANS HERE WERE DYING FOR THAT AMAZING WIN OVER NUMBER 11 INDIANA, HOPING THEY CAN MAYBE RUSH THE FIELD EVEN HERE ON HOMECOMING. AND THE SOLD OUT CROWD. EXCEPT IT JUST WASN’T MEANT TO BE. MARK GRONOWSKI EARLY IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, AFTER A RUN COMES UP A LITTLE SLOW AND DIDN’T GET BACK IN THE GAME. AND THEN IT WAS A STORY OF JUST COMING UP A BIT SHORT WHEN IT MATTERED MOST. ON DEFENSE, UNABLE TO WRAP UP ELIJAH SURRATT ON WHAT WOULD PROVE TO BE THE GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN 49 YARDS AND THEN HANK BROWN IN RELIEF, UNABLE TO GET IT DONE, JUST GOING FIVE OF 13 DOWN THE STRETCH. AND THE HAWKEYES JUST SHORT A PAINFUL 2015 LOSS DESPITE AN AWESOME EFFORT FROM THE DEFENSE HOLDING THIS VAUNTED INDIANA OFFENSE TO WELL BELOW THEIR SEASON AVERAGE, THE HAWKEYES FALL TO THREE AND TWO. I REALLY ONLY CARE ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING. THAT’S REALLY THE MAIN STAT I CARE ABOUT. I’M GONNA BE HONEST. THAT’S THAT’S THE NUMBER ONE STAT I FOCUS ON, YOU KNOW, LEFT THE DOOR OPEN WITH SOME MISTAKES AND THE TURNOVER THING. WE’RE MINUS ONE ON THE SEASON RIGHT NOW. TURNOVER WAYS TURNOVER WISE IN FIVE GAMES INTO IT. AND WAS HOPING WE’D BE A LITTLE HIGHER THAN THAT RIGHT NOW. AND THAT WAS OBVIOUSLY YOU KNOW A FACTOR TODAY HANK BRAD AND HIS FIRST MEANINGFUL ACTION OF THE SEASON JUST A BIT OFF A TOUGH SPOT FOR THE BACKUP. FRUSTRATING PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT UP. I FEEL LIKE WE CAN BEAT ANYBODY AS LONG AS WE PLAY OUR BEST BALL. AND I’M SURE EVERY TEAM FEELS LIKE THAT. SO JUST THE COMPETITIVE NATURE IN ME IS JUST HURT, SAYS GRONOWSKI WAS UNABLE TO DECELERATE, SO THEY DIDN’T PUT HIM BACK IN THE GAME. IT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE HE’S WORRIED ABOUT THE LONG TERM HEALTH OF HIS QUARTERBACK, BUT WE’LL CHECK MORE IN THE COMING DAYS. THEY DO HAVE A BYE WEEK TO LET THIS ONE SOAK IN, AND IT STINGS AS THE HAWKEYES OH SO CLOSE ONCE AGAIN PROVING THAT THEY CAN HANG WITH RANKED TEAMS THEY JUST HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO BEAT THEM YE

Fernando Mendoza threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt with 1:28 to play to give No. 11 Indiana a 20-15 win over Iowa on Saturday.

The closest win of the season for the Hoosiers was one coach Curt Cignetti called a “gut check,” and his players agreed.

“We've never been tested like that,” said offensive lineman Pat Coogan. “We have so much room to get better. And that's the best feeling.”

Mendoza connected with Sarratt, who had six catches for 132 yards, on a slant route down the left side and Sarratt broke the tackle attempt of Iowa’s Deshaun Lee on his way to the touchdown.

Mendoza knew on the play Iowa would blitz, and that his outside receivers would have room.

“It was kind of ‘dealer’s choice,'” he said. “When the game's on the line and I can throw a pass like that to my guy Elijah ... that's college football. That's what it's all about.”

Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which came into the game ranked second nationally in total offense and scoring offense, was held to 337 yards and its lowest scoring output of the season. But the Hoosiers got two touchdown passes from Mendoza, who threw for 233 yards, and two field goals from Nico Radicic.

“It was the good, the bad, and the ugly, and there was a lot of the bad and the ugly,” Cignetti said.

Iowa (3-2, 1-1) had a chance to break a 13-13 tie with 2:01 to play, but Drew Stevens missed a 42-yard field goal.

After Indiana stopped Iowa on its final possession, Mendoza ran off the last seconds of the game by sprinting into the end zone, where he was tackled for a safety.

Cignetti called for the play, knowing Iowa had a timeout left.

“Coach said, ‘Hey, take a safety, run out of the end zone,’" Mendoza said. “When I got to the 2, I saw all zeros on the clock, but I kept going.”

Mendoza said: “I know I really cooked people's (point) spreads. My apologies out to them.”

Mendoza completed 13 of 23 passes. He was sacked twice and was hurried five times.

“At the end of the day, he passed the test, because he made the key play,” Cignetti said.

“He's a tough SOB,” Coogan said. “He shows up and plays. The kid is uber-talented, and we have to let him shine.”

Indiana took an early 7-0 lead. An interception by Amare Ferrell on the third offensive play of the game gave the Hoosiers the ball at Iowa's 24-yard line, and they quickly converted with Mendoza's 14-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr.

“The start of the game was not what we wanted,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “But we responded.”

Stevens kicked a 40-yard field goal later in the first quarter and the Hawkeyes took a 10-7 lead in the final minute of the first half on Mark Gronowski’s 3-yard touchdown run. The Hoosiers tied the game at 10 on Radicic’s 46-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.

It was Iowa’s 11th consecutive loss against a ranked opponent.

The takeaway

Indiana: The toughest test of the season will give the Hoosiers something to work on in the bye week, Cignetti said. “We left a lot of plays out there, especially in the passing game,” Cignetti said.

Iowa: The second loss of the season will loom over the Hawkeyes heading into an off week and then into a stretch that includes home games with Penn State and Oregon. “I told everyone that there is still a lot of football to be played,” Ferentz said.

Gronowski injured

Gronowski left the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent lower leg injury.

Gronowski, who transferred to Iowa after winning two FCS national championships at South Dakota State, was injured on a fourth-quarter run after completing 19 of 25 passes for 144 yards. Gronowski wanted to come back on Iowa's next series, but was replaced by Hank Brown, who finished 5 of 13 for 48 yards.

“He just didn't feel like he could decelerate if he ran,” said Ferentz, who added Gronowski would undergo further tests on Sunday.
