Iowa weather: Sunshine building in Saturday with 60s all weekend
TODAY. ALL RIGHT, JODI, THANK YOU. LOTS OF FOLKS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE WEEKEND. AND WE ALL KIND OF WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING. IT’S LOOKING GOOD. I MEAN, MOST OF THE WEEKEND I THINK WILL BE DRY, BUT SUNDAY SOME OF US MAY HAVE A CHANCE FOR A FEW SHOWERS. BUT IF YOU’VE GOT PLANS TO HEAD OUT ON SATURDAY, THINGS ARE LOOKING PRETTY GOOD. MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES THERE. WE’RE SITTING AT 64 FOR A HIGH AND AGAIN COULD SEE AN EARLY SHOWER OR STORM ON SUNDAY, BUT LARGELY A DRY LOOKING WEEKEND. WE LOOK INTO THE EXTENDED FORECAST, THOUGH, HEADED IN TOWARDS MONDAY AND WE’RE GOING TO CHANGE THINGS UP A LITTLE BIT. I’M SURE YOU’VE HEARD A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS. WE’VE GOT A POTENTIALLY SIGNIFICANT WEATHER SYSTEM THAT’S GOING TO BE PUSHING ITS WAY ON IN RIGHT NOW. IT LOOKS LIKE LATE AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING COULD EVEN SEE THIS BLEED OVER INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. WE ARE IN AN ELEVATED RISK AREA RIGHT NOW. THE SPC DOES NOT OFTEN ISSUE THESE 30% CHANCE AREAS THIS EARLY OUT OR THIS FAR OUT, BUT WE’VE GOT ONE OF THOSE THAT’S SET UP OVER THE STATE. AND AS IT SITS RIGHT NOW, COULD SEE LARGE HAIL. THERE’S THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND EVEN TORNADOES, THOUGH SOME OF THE DETAILS ON SOME OF THESE THREATS ARE A LITTLE MURKY AT THE MOMENT. AS WE GET A LITTLE BIT CLOSER. WE’LL HAVE BETTER IDEAS ON THE TIMING AND EXACTLY WHAT THOSE THREATS WILL BE. BUT THE BIGGEST THREATS RIGHT NOW LOOK TO BE HIGH WINDS TO AROUND 60 TO 70MPH COULD SEE HAIL UP TO AROUND TWO INCHES OR SO. FLASH FLOODING POTENTIAL IS LOW AND THE TORNADO THREAT RIGHT NOW LOOKS LOW. BUT SURFACE WINDS THAT ARE OUT OF THE SOUTHWEST. AND A LOT OF TIMES WHEN WE SEE SIGNIFICANT SYSTEMS LIKE THIS ROLL IN, IT’S HELPFUL TO HAVE THOSE OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST TO GET THAT TURNING OF THE WINDS. BUT AGAIN, THAT WILL BECOME CLEARER AS WE GET A LITTLE BIT CLOSER. YOU LOOK OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW, OVERCAST FOR MARSHALLTOWN AS WELL AS DOWNTOWN LAMONI, COMING IN WITH OVERCAST SKIES. ALGONA AS WELL. EVERYBODY IN THIS DREARY DAY TOGETHER. YOUR HOUR BY HOUR FORECAST CLEARS OUT THE CLOUDS THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT, LEAVING US WITH SUNNY SKIES TOMORROW. IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT TO THE RELAYS, TOMORROW LOOKS TO BE A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR THAT. SCATTERED SHOWERS UP OFF TO THE NORTHWEST WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE EAST THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT, AND AS WE HEAD INTO SUNDAY, MORE CLOUDS COULD SEE A STRAY SHOWER OR THUNDERSTORM PUSH THROUGH AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THOSE AFTERNOON HOURS AND THEN INTO MONDAY AGAIN, WE’LL REALLY START TO SURGE THOSE WINDS OUT OF THE SOUTH THAT’S GOING TO DRIVE UP NOT JUST THE MOISTURE, BUT THE TEMPERATURES TOO. WE’RE GOING TO BE TALKING HIGHS BACK IN THE LOW 80S. AS WE KICK OFF YOUR WORKWEEK. WE ARE WEATHER IMPACT FOR THAT DAY. AGAIN, WE’RE PLANNING ON AT LEAST SEEING WIDESPREAD SEVERE STORMS. AGAIN, THE THREATS ARE A LITTLE UNCERTAIN AT THIS POINT, BUT WE KNOW SEVERE WEATHER IS LIKELY THAT DAY. AFTER THAT, TEMPERATURES START TO BACK DOWN. WE’RE IN THE MID 6

Iowa weather: Sunshine building in Saturday with 60s all weekend
It's been a cloudy and cool day, Friday, but if you're a sunshine lover don't fret! We've got a day nearly filled with sun on Saturday as strong Canadian high pressure dips south over the Great Lakes!Interactive Radar | Weather AlertsThat sunshine will help us warm back into the middle 60s and with just light winds it's looking like a wonderful day. Clouds build in by Saturday evening and will be with us throughout the day Sunday as the area of high pressure slowly pushes eastward and a strong area of low pressure in the mountain west starts to move in. This will begin to increase our chances for showers by Sunday night and will set the stage for severe storm potential Monday.Winds will increase ahead of the area of low pressure surging ample Gulf moisture into Iowa kicking our dewpoints back into the middle 60s and high temperatures into the low 80s. It's going to feel very warm and muggy for late April. With the heat and moisture in place we'll have a large amount of instability across much of the state providing significant energy for any storm that does fire to tap into. There's still some question with regards to the exact evolution of the storms, but at this point large hail and damaging wind look like the primary threats, though depending how higher resolution models come in as we get closer, tornadoes cannot be ruled out either. There is quite a bit of uncertainty at this stage as to how significant of a tornado threat will exist, but regardless of the exact tornado threat it's looking to be a very active day.Details will be refined as we get closer, but for now late afternoon into the evening looks to be the time with some storms carrying into the overnight. Global models paint more of a linear picture dragging a line across the state associated with a cold front attacked to the robust area of low pressure as it pushes over Minnesota. These models lack the detail to pick up on what could be discrete cells forming ahead of that cold front which magnifies the importance of seeing what shorter range, higher resolution models will say this weekend as get closer to Monday.Either way, plan for an impactful weather day. As the storms system passes temperatures will fall Tuesday/Wednesday with highs only topping out in the mid to upper 60s and morning lows Wednesday in the mid 40s with high pressure filling in bringing in more sunshine. Temperatures build back into the 70s by Thursday as another weaker low pressure center pushes into Iowa from Kansas bringing our next chance for showers and thunderstorms. Any severe weather threat with this system looks to stay rather limited as much of the instability staying south of the state and some weaker instability throughout southeastern Iowa. Des Moines ForecastToday: Generally cloudy, breezy, and cool. Some clearing late in the day. High 59F. Winds N at 10 to 20 mph.Tonight: Mostly cloudy early, then clearing overnight. Low 40F. Winds NNE at 10 to 20 mph.Tomorrow: Sunny along with a few clouds. High 63F. Winds ENE at 10 to 15 mph.Tomorrow Night: Partly cloudy skies during the evening will give way to cloudy skies overnight. Low 48F. Winds ESE at 10 to 15 mph.Sunday: Partly to mostly cloudy. A spotty shower or storm mainly in the morning. High 69F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph.Sunday Night: Spotty storms late, mainly over northern Iowa. Low 60F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph.
