Iowa weather: Heat builds this week

The cool fall air will stick around today, but a return to some summer heat is expected this week.

THIS WEEK TOO. TODD, HOW ABOUT THAT? IN THE MEANTIME, WE’VE GOT A NICE LOOK AT THE MOON HERE THIS EVENING. IT’S FULL TONIGHT. THE WHAT’S WHAT? WHAT’S THIS ONE? THE CORN MOON. I LOSE TRACK OF THEIR NAMES, TO BE HONEST. THE NEXT ONE WILL BE THE HARVEST MOON. WHATEVER IT IS, WE’VE GOT SOME WARMER BREEZE, THOUGH, COMING BACK HERE AS WE HEAD INTO THE NEW COMING WORKWEEK. THAT’S THE BIG THING FOR TOMORROW. MORE WARMTH, A LITTLE BIT BREEZY WINDS. WE DO HAVE A RAIN CHANCE COMING UP THIS WEEK TO THAT ONE, MAINLY ON TUESDAY AS SOON MAYBE MONDAY NIGHT FOR SOME OF US TOO. AND THEN WE’VE GOT THE SUMMER HEAT SETTING UP HERE AS WE GO THROUGH THIS WEEK. THE AVERAGE HIGH THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ABOUT 80. WE’VE BEEN BELOW THAT FOR A FEW DAYS NOW, SO TOMORROW IS ACTUALLY JUST A RETURN TO NORMAL. BUT THEN WE GO ABOVE NORMAL HERE AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE REST OF THE WEEK. IN FACT. YEAH, BY THE TIME WE GET TO THE WEEKEND, SOME AREAS OF THE STATE MIGHT BE PUSHING NEAR 90 DEGREES AND WE’LL HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE HUMIDITY TO COME BACK INTO THE PICTURE TO MEASURE THAT, USING THE DEW POINT NUMBER, THAT TEMPERATURE NUMBER IN THE MID 40S. NOW REAL DRY AIR, THAT NUMBER IS GOING TO SHIFT UPWARDS THROUGH THE 50S TO ABOUT 60, WHICH IS MORE OF YOUR KIND. I WOULD SAY TYPICAL SUMMER SORT OF LEVEL. SO A LITTLE BIT MAYBE STICKY IS A STRONG WORD, BUT BY MIDWEEK WE’RE NOT GOING TO HAVE THAT, YOU KNOW, JUST BLISSFULLY COOL DRY FEEL TO THE AIR ANYMORE. IT’LL FEEL A LITTLE BIT MORE LIKE, YOU KNOW, WEEKS AGO, BACK IN AUGUST, WOULD HIGH PRESSURE IS IN PLACE, THOUGH RIGHT NOW. IT’S VERY NICE AND QUIET HERE ACROSS THE MIDWEST. OFF TO OUR WEST, THOUGH, WHERE WINDS HAVE ALREADY SHIFTED TO THE SOUTH. STILL WARM OUT IN PARTS OF THE PLAINS, AND YOU CAN SEE RETURNING MOISTURE IN THE FORM OF SOME CLOUDS AND OUT TOWARDS PARTS OF COLORADO AND THE NEBRASKA PANHANDLE. SOME SHOWERS HERE TOO, AS THAT WARMTH MOVES OUR WAY. HERE’S WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT TOMORROW. WIDESPREAD UPPER 70S. AND THEN A FEW OF US TOP OUT RIGHT AT ABOUT 80 DEGREES HERE BY THE AFTERNOON HOURS. SO SEVERAL DEGREES WARMER TOMORROW THE BREEZE PICKS UP AS WELL. TOMORROW. TODAY WAS REALLY DRY OR REALLY CALM WITH THAT HIGH PRESSURE OVERHEAD. TOMORROW NOT AS MUCH SOUTHERLY WINDS GUSTING UP TO ABOUT 25 TO 30MPH AT TIMES. SO THOSE ARE YOUR TWO BIG THINGS FOR TOMORROW. OUR SKIES, THOUGH, WILL STILL BE DRY DURING THE DAY. DAYBREAK TOMORROW, SIX 7:00 IN THE MORNING. SKIES STILL VERY CLEAR. WE’LL START TO SEE GRADUALLY SEE AN INCREASE IN CLOUD COVERAGE, KIND OF THOSE MID TO HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS AS WE GO INTO THE AFTERNOON. THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE STILL FAIRLY DRY. TOMORROW EVENING, MORE LIKELY LATE OVERNIGHT. THAT’S WHEN OUR NEXT DISTURBANCE MOVES IN FROM THE WEST. I WOULD SAY WESTERN IOWA. YOU HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OF SEEING A SHOWER OR STORM, SORT OF ISOLATED TO SCATTERED ACTIVITY BEFORE DAYBREAK ON TUESDAY. AND THEN FROM ABOUT SUNRISE AND INTO THE MORNING HOURS OF TUESDAY. THIS SORT OF SCATTERED SHOWER AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS MOVES THROUGH THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE. AND THEN BY THE AFTERNOON, WE’RE STARTING TO MOVE THAT OVER INTO EASTERN IOWA. AND BY AFTERNOON OUR CLOUDS WILL DISSIPATE AND WE’LL START TO SEE MORE SUNSHINE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF YOUR TUESDAY. SO THAT’S THE MAIN RAIN CHANCE ON THE BOARD AFTER THAT. THEN FORECAST IS DOMINATED BY WARMTH AND SUNSHINE. WE JUMP UP INTO THE 80S WEDNESDAY. THERE YOU SEE BY FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY. YEAH PARTS OF SOUTHERN IOWA I WOULD SAY YOU COULD GET SOME 90 DEGREE READINGS DOWN THERE. AND WE’LL KEEP OUR NIGHTS WARMER TOO. UP INTO THE 60S, THE MORE LIKELY IS GOI

Today is the end of this recent stretch of cool early September days.Right now, Iowa sits under an expansive area of high pressure covering the Midwest. As this high continues east tomorrow, our winds will turn to the south, get breezy, and bring heat back to the state.Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts | Skycams Monday morning will dawn with less of a chill than recent mornings. Expect lows around 50° overnight. The rest of tomorrow brings increasing winds, gusting 20-30 mph at times, and highs around 80°. Cloud cover will slowly increase through the day, but we will remain dry.At the same time, there's a possibility for wildfire smoke to drift back over Iowa. Currently a swath of haze covers the Northern Rockies of Idaho and Montana. This will move slowly toward us into Monday. There's a low chance of an isolated shower or storm Monday night — mainly in western Iowa. The low chance of rain comes to central Iowa during the day Tuesday. Showers will be isolated to scattered, so many of us could get through the day dry. This rain chance comes courtesy of a broad wave of low pressure passing overhead. Once it's gone, a large area of high pressure builds into the central US and doesn't leave for the rest of the week. From Wednesday into the weekend, high temperatures will surge through the 80s to near 90°. At this point, no major systems will look to break this pattern, so sunshine will be the default weather to look forward to. Des Moines forecastToday: Sunny. High 72F.
