Iowa weather: Hotter temperatures on the horizon

Temperatures continue to soar for Friday and the weekend when highs could approach record levels.

SO THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING THAT FOR US THERE. ALSO, I WANT TO THANK MOTHER NATURE BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, TODAY A LITTLE BIT WARMER. YEAH. BUT MAN, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. EVERYBODY THAT WAS CLAMORING FOR THE WARMER TEMPERATURES TO COME BACK BEFORE IT GETS TOO, TOO COLD. PRETTY HAPPY. YEAH. THEY’RE BACK FOR YOU THIS WEEKEND, SO GET READY. YEAH. TODAY. NOT SO BAD OUT THERE. BEEN A LOT OF SUNSHINE. YES, ON THE WARMER SIDE, BUT NOT TOO HUMID. AND ONCE THE SUN WENT DOWN HERE THIS EVENING, IT’S BEEN A PRETTY PLEASANT THURSDAY. TEMPERATURES ARE HANGING ON NEAR 70 NOW IN ALTOONA. JUST A LITTLE BIT OF A WIND OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST AT ABOUT SIX MILES PER HOUR. TEMPERATURES ARE STILL RUNNING A GOOD FIVE, MAYBE TEN DEGREES IF YOU’RE IN SOUTHWEST IOWA, WARMER TODAY OR NOW, I SHOULD SAY, THAN THIS TIME. SAME TIME YESTERDAY EVENING. SO WE KIND OF ARE ON THAT WARMING TREND, ESPECIALLY FOR THE OVERNIGHT HOURS THAT WILL CONTINUE INTO THE DAYTIME HOURS AS WELL. TEMPERATURE WISE HERE IN THE METRO, WE’RE HANGING OUT IN THE 70S FOR A LOT OF SPOTS. UPPER 60S IN ALTOONA CARLISLE 70 DOWN IN NORWALK, 70 OUT TOWARDS MINBURN. AND THEN WE’RE AT 74 RIGHT NOW IN WEST DES MOINES. OUR TEMPERATURES WILL ONLY GET HOTTER HERE AS WE HEAD CLOSER TOWARDS THE WEEKEND. WE’RE TALKING LOW 90S ON FRIDAY, SO WE DO JUMP UP QUITE A BIT HERE TOMORROW. HOTTEST DAYS COMING THIS WEEKEND, PROBABLY SATURDAY. THE HOTTEST WILL STAY IN THE LOW 90S THOUGH, GOING INTO SUNDAY AND MONDAY. NORMAL HIGHS UPPER 70, SO WE’LL BE WELL ABOVE THAT HERE GOING INTO THE WEEKEND AND BEYOND. WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MAYBE FLIRT WITH SOME RECORDS HERE. BEST DAY LOOKING SATURDAY. IT LOOKS LIKE OUR BEST DAY TO MAYBE TIE OR POTENTIALLY BREAK A RECORD HIGHS COMING IN AT 95. THE RECORD THERE SATURDAY 96 TOMORROW. WE’RE TALKING LOW 90S 93. OUR FORECAST HERE TOMORROW. THAT RECORD STANDS AT 96 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1927. SO I DON’T THINK WE’LL BREAK ANYTHING TOMORROW. BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO BE A WARM ONE. WE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF SMOKE AND HAZE ON THE HORIZON HERE TODAY. YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT IT’S LIKELY GOING TO LINGER AS WE HEAD INTO FRIDAY. I THINK THE GOOD NEWS IS, A LOT OF OUR MODELS ARE SHOWING THAT WILDFIRE SMOKE KIND OF LINGERING JUST A LITTLE BIT. IT’S MORE ON THE THINNER SIDE. SO WE’RE NOT TALKING A LOT OF THICK SMOKE OUT THERE, BUT YOU MAY NOTICE IT ON THE HORIZON AND IT COULD IMPACT OUR AIR QUALITY, WHICH WE’VE SEEN AT TIMES HERE TODAY. IT’S KIND OF FLUCTUATING BETWEEN GOOD AND MODERATE. HERE YOU’LL SEE CURRENT AIR QUALITY DOES HAVE A PATCH OF NORTH CENTRAL INTO CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN IOWA IN THAT MODERATE AIR QUALITY TO. SO SOMETHING TO JUST BE MINDFUL OF IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THOSE PARTICLES OUTSIDE. AS WE GO THROUGH THE REST OF TONIGHT, WE’LL KEEP A FEW CLOUDS AROUND. I THINK TOMORROW WILL FEATURE A MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS, BUT OVERALL MAINLY SUNNY. MAYBE AGAIN. A LITTLE BIT OF HAZE AND SMOKE IN THE SKY. WE SHOULD STAY DRY. THIS MODEL WANTS TO BRING IN A FEW SHOWERS, MAYBE A QUICK STORM UP INTO NORTH, CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN IOWA. I THINK A LOT OF US ARE DRY, BUT THERE’S THAT POTENTIAL FOR A QUICK SHOWER HERE NORTH OF THE METRO. OTHERWISE, WE HEAD INTO SATURDAY. I THINK WE’RE DRY SATURDAY. OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN LIKELY NOT COMING UNTIL LATE SUNDAY. SO TONIGHT WE COOL OFF A LITTLE BIT MID 60S IN THE CITY, SLIGHTLY COOLER IN THOSE OUTLYING AREAS. TOMORROW’S FORECAST WILL PUT US BACK INTO THE 90S. WE’RE TALKING MORE SUNSHINE. EIGHT DAY FORECAST WILL KEEP US IN THE 90S ALL THE WAY THROUGH TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. SO PRETTY LONG STRETCH HERE OF 90 DEGREE TEMPERATURES AS WE HEAD FURTHER INTO SEPTEMBER. BEST CHANCE OF RAIN LIKELY COMING LATE SUNDAY, ALTHOUGH THAT CHANCE PRETTY ISOLATED. AND THEN WE’LL SEE JUST A FEW

The heat is kicking into high gear as we head into the weekend. Fortunately for us, the humidity does not look to be that high as we head into Saturday and Sunday. This means that the heat index won’t be like what we’ve seen earlier in the summer, so we are not looking at heat index values well into the triple digits. Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts The 90s are with us at least through Tuesday of next week. We have the potential to tie a record high temperature both Saturday and Sunday. Not for sure a slam dunk, but we will be close to those thresholds as we head into the weekend. The smoke and haze has been limited today, but a thin layer of smoke will linger tonight into the day tomorrow. Air quality will likely fluctuate between good and moderate over the evening and into the start of the day tomorrow. Our rain chances continue to be very limited over the next week. Our next best chance to see some raindrops comes by late Sunday evening. Those chances will be fairly spotty across the state. Aside from Sunday, our next chance for any precipitation may not come again until next Thursday. Once we get through this stretch of 90s, the temperatures should mellow out back closer to average by the latter part of next week. Des Moines weather forecast:Tonight: Some clouds. Low around 65F. Winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph.Tomorrow: Mostly sunny skies and hot. High 93F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph.Tomorrow Night: Partly cloudy skies. Low near 70F. Winds S at 10 to 15 mph.Saturday: Partly cloudy. Hot. High 95F. Winds SW at 10 to 15 mph.
