This current stretch of September heat delivered record temperatures to central Iowa this weekend.
The Des Moines International Airport reached 96 degrees Saturday, tying the record for Sept. 13.
This is the fourth time that mark has been reached since records began in the 1870s. Temperatures in Des Moines hit 96 degrees on this date in 1897, 1931, 1939, and now in 2025.
For perspective, the average high temperature this time of year is 78 degrees.
Saturday's 96-degree reading also clocks in as our second hottest so far in 2025.
Des Moines hit 97 degrees back on June 21.
The metro area also saw record warmth on three days back in March. Des Moines' last daily record low was in October 2022. Since then, the city has tied or set 10 daily record highs.
