Iowa weather: Heat continues and storms pop up
More 90s are possible as a new week begins.
ANNOUNCED. TIME NOW IS 1022 AND IT’S BEEN A WARM DAY OUT THERE. ZANE OBVIOUSLY COOLING DOWN AFTER THE SUN WENT DOWN, BUT WE’RE KIND OF IN THAT SECOND SUMMER MODE HERE WHERE THE TEMPERATURES GO UP AND WE’RE NOT SURE WHETHER OR NOT WE SHOULD BE DRINKING PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES OR HITTING THE POOL. I THINK SOME PEOPLE WILL DO IT REGARDLESS OF THE TEMPERATURE. BUT YEAH, WE ARE IN THAT TIME OF YEAR. YES, WE WILL HAVE THE HEAT A LITTLE WHILE LONGER HERE TO BO BEFORE WE FINALLY GET INTO THE MORE SEASONAL SORT OF STUFF THAT IS IN THE LONGER TERM PICTURE, THOUGH, A LITTLE BIT MORE SHORTER TERM. WE GOT A CHANCE OF SOME STORMS COMING BACK TOMORROW ON YOUR SUNDAY. DON’T GET TOO EXCITED. IT’S MOSTLY AN ISOLATED POSSIBILITY. LET’S GET A LITTLE MORE WIDESPREAD THOUGH. ONCE WE GET INTO LATER ON NEXT WEEK. ABOUT TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY. THERE ARE A FEW MORE MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES FOR SOME RAINFALL IN THE MEANTIME, THIS HEAT IS STILL GOING TO BE A LITTLE PERSISTENT AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW AND SUNDAY AND INTO THE COMING WORKWEEK AS WELL. BACK HERE ON SATURDAY NIGHT, IT’S STILL A MILD ONE OUT THERE. WE’RE STILL ABOVE 80 DEGREES HERE IN OUR MAJOR METRO AREAS HERE IN DES MOINES, 84 UP IN WATERLOO AND CEDAR FALLS AROUND 80 DEGREES. YOU HEAD OUTSIDE OF THE LARGER CITIES, THOUGH, DOWN TO MOSTLY 70, I GUESS. LAMONI STILL 81 AS WELL. WE’VE GOT SOME KIND OF MID TO HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS THAT HAVE BEEN STREAMING IN OVER THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. THAT’S ABOUT IT THOUGH, SKY WISE. YOU CAN SEE A FEW SCATTERED AREAS OF SOME SHOWER AND STORM ACTIVITY OUT OVER THE PLAINS. THERE’S BASICALLY GOING TO BE A BIG TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE THAT’S OVER THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY, AND THAT’S GOING TO SWING BY US AS WE HEAD THROUGH TOMORROW AND INTO MONDAY WILL BE RIGHT ON THE EDGE. SO THERE WILL BE SOME POSSIBILITIES FOR SOME SHOWERS AND SOME STORMS TO FORM IN IOWA OR MOVE INTO IOWA. BUT WE’RE NOT QUITE ON THE MAIN TRACK OF THESE STORM SYSTEMS, AT LEAST FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS OF THIS WEEK. LET’S GO THROUGH THE REST OF TONIGHT. THESE CLOUDS JUST KIND OF HANG AROUND AS WE GO THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. SO WE’LL STAY DRY INTO TOMORROW MORNING. AND AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY ON YOUR SUNDAY, WE’LL BASICALLY SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOUD COVER THAN WE DID TODAY. KIND OF FILTER THAT SUNSHINE A BIT AND THEN WATCH ONCE WE HEAD TOWARDS THE AFTERNOON HOURS. YOU SEE HERE TOWARDS MAYBE AS SOON AS 1:00, BUT LIKE TWO, THREE FOR A FEW SPOTTY LITTLE SHOWERS, SOME KIND OF SMALL CELLS, A FEW DOWNPOURS, MAYBE AN ISOLATED RUMBLE OF THUNDER TO DO POP UP ACROSS PARTS OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN IOWA DURING THE AFTERNOON. PRETTY LIMITED COVERAGE THOUGH, SO SPOTTY IS GOING TO BE KIND OF THE NAME OF THE GAME AS LONG AS YOU’RE NOT UNDER ONE OF THOSE DOWNPOURS, YOU’RE HEADED BACK UP PROBABLY CLOSE TO 90 DEGREES HERE AGAIN TOMORROW. MAYBE SOME MID LOWER TO MID 90S IN PARTS OF SOUTHERN AND SOUTHEASTERN IOWA. SO NOT THE, YOU KNOW, RECORD TYING HEAT OF TODAY, BUT STILL DEFINITELY A LOT WARMER THAN USUAL. PROBABLY A LITTLE BETTER CHANCE OF A STORM OR A SHOWER IS GOING TO COME AS WE HEAD TOWARDS TOMORROW EVENING AND INTO TOMORROW NIGHT, A FEW OF THOSE BANDS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL TRY TO SPIN OFF OF THE MISSOURI RIVER VALLEY HERE INTO IOWA. THIS MODELING IS NOT SUPER GUNG HO ON THAT, BUT OTHER VERSIONS OF MODELING ARE STILL SEEING SOME LINGERING SHOWER ACTIVITY BY EARLY MONDAY. SO THEN THAT’S THE WEEKEND STUFF THAT’S OUT OF HERE. AND THEN WE’LL START TO SHIFT OUR WEATHER PATTERN AS WE GO. ESPECIALLY, LIKE I MENTIONED, TOWARDS BASICALLY TUESDAY ONWARD TUESDAY AFTERNOON FOR THE MOST PART I THINK WILL BE DRY. BUT THEN TUESDAY NIGHT AND INTO WEDNESDAY, WE’LL SEE SORT OF REPEATED POSSIBILITIES FOR SCATTERED SCATTERED SHOWER AND STORM ACTIVITY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY, WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THEN INTO THURSDAY. AND THEN ONCE WE GET PAST THURSDAY, THIS IS WHEN WE WILL RETURN BACK TO FALL. SO WE’RE IN BASICALLY 80S TO LOW 90S FROM SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY. THEN WE’LL TUMBLE BACK TO MORE SEASONAL READINGS, EVEN DOWN TOWARDS THE LOWER END OF THE 70S.
