Iowa weather: Sunny skies and cooler weather for the weekend

Cooler and less humid air has finally arrived in Iowa making for a beautiful weekend forecast.

UNTIL 7:00 TONIGHT. WE TOOK A LOOK AT IRELAND’S FORECAST AHEAD OF THE BIG GAME TODAY. BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR TEMPERATURES HERE? LOOKS LIKE IT’S A GREAT WEEKEND TO BE HERE IN IOWA. YEAH THE WEATHER REALLY SHAPING UP TO BE PRETTY NICE. SO YOU CAN BE A LITTLE JEALOUS OF SCOTT AND STACEY AND DILLON OVER IN IN IRELAND. BUT HEY, AT LEAST WE’RE GETTING SOME BEAUTIFUL WEATHER HERE THIS WEEKEND. WE’VE SEEN A LITTLE BIT OF FOG OUT THERE THIS MORNING. THAT’S COMING BEHIND SOME SHOWERS AND STORMS THAT DEVELOPED OVERNIGHT. BUT THE MAIN COLD FRONT, THE ONE THAT’S BRINGING US THE DRIER, THE COOLER AIR IT’S MOVING THROUGH RIGHT NOW AND THAT’S GOING TO SWEEP THAT FOG OUT OF HERE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. WE HEAD INITIAL COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH YESTERDAY. THAT HELPED TO KICK OFF THOSE ISOLATED SHOWERS AND STORMS THAT WE SAW THROUGHOUT THE OVERNIGHT. BUT THIS IS THE MAIN FRONT. AND ONCE THAT MOVES THROUGH WE WILL SEE SOME PRETTY GOOD NORTHWEST BREEZES KICKING IN HERE LATER TODAY. AND THAT’S GOING TO DRAG THAT DRIER AIR ON IN FOR THE REST OF YOUR SATURDAY AND REALLY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK AS WELL. YOU CAN STILL SEE SOME OF THOSE LOW CLOUDS AND PATCHY FOG OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. THAT’S GOING TO STICK AROUND FOR ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO, BUT THEN IT WILL BE SWEPT ON OUT OF HERE BY THAT FRONT STILL SITTING AT 69 DEGREES. I THINK OUR TEMPERATURES WILL ACTUALLY DROP A LITTLE BIT MORE AS THAT FRONT MOVES ON IN. YOU CAN SEE IT’S DOWN TO 62 IN FORT DODGE, 61 IN ALGONA SPENCER IS IN THE 50S AT THIS HOUR, STILL CLOSER TO 70 AS YOU GET INTO SOUTHERN IOWA. BUT AGAIN, THAT FRONT MAKING PRETTY QUICK PROGRESS THROUGH THE STATE. YOU SEE THOSE NORTH WINDS PICKING UP A LITTLE BIT AS YOU HEAD TO THE NORTH OF DES MOINES. TEN MILE AN HOUR WINDS NOW IN AMES, 12 MILE AN HOUR WINDS IN CARROLL. AND I EXPECT THOSE NORTHWEST BREEZES TO GET A LITTLE STRONGER LATER TODAY. SO IF YOU DO HAVE SOME OUTDOOR PLANS, THERE WILL BE SOME BREEZES 20, MAYBE 25 MILES AN HOUR OUT OF THE NORTH AND WEST, PARTICULARLY DURING THE LATE MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS. SO THAT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE GETTING OUTSIDE. OTHERWISE IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY. YOU SEE THE CLOUDS OF FOG MOVING ON OUT OF HERE. BY 9:00. WE GOT SUNSHINE FOR THE REST OF THE MORNING. A COUPLE OF CLOUDS KIND OF BUBBLING UP AS WE HEAD INTO THE AFTERNOON, AND HIGHS TODAY ONLY TOPPING OUT IN THE MID 70S. THAT’S GOING TO FEEL REALLY NICE. AND THE HUMIDITY WILL BE DROPPING ALL DAY AS WELL. AND THEN HEADING INTO THE OVERNIGHT IT STARTS TO GET A LITTLE COOL. LOOK AT HOW QUICKLY OUR TEMPERATURES DROP OFF INTO THE 60S AND EVEN 50S THERE. AS WE GET PAST MIDNIGHT. SO YEAH, MUCH COOLER AIR STARTING TO MOVE ON IN THIS AFTERNOON, LOOKING AT HIGHS ANYWHERE FROM ABOUT 72 TO 78, DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE STATE YOU’RE ON. BUT EVERYBODY IN THE 70S TODAY, TONIGHT, DOWN INTO THE LOW 50S, I THINK WE WIND UP AROUND 53 HERE IN THE METRO. CAN’T RULE OUT SOME UPPER 40S FOR SOME OF YOU. SO LOOKING PRETTY COOL INTO SUNDAY MORNING SUNDAY AFTERNOON ANOTHER FANTASTIC DAY. HIGHS IN THE LOW TO MID 70S HERE ALL ACROSS THE AREA. I WANT TO SHOW YOU MONDAY MORNING’S FORECAST BECAUSE THIS IS SOME OF THE COOLEST AIR WE HAVE SEEN IN MONTHS. I THINK WE GET ABOUT 50 HERE IN DES MOINES. BUT YEAH, OUTSIDE OF THE METRO WE’RE LOOKING AT LOWS IN THE MID AND UPPER 40S. TO START OFF YOUR MONDAY. SO AS THE SCHOOL C SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS, YOU MAY HAVE TO GRAB THAT LIGHT JACKET FOR THE MORNING HOURS. SAME THING ON TUESDAY THAT MORNING LOW AROUND 50. AND THEN WE START TO WARM UP A LITTLE BIT THERE TOWARD THE SECOND HALF OF NEXT WEEK. BUT WE’RE ONLY TALKING UPPER 70S TO AROUND 80, SO NOT A

The front will pull in some drier air that will clear out the fog by 6 to 7am in the metro, and by 9am across southern Iowa.Behind the front, very comfortable conditions will move in for the rest of the day. Winds will be a little breezy at times coming in out of the northwest at 10 to 20mph with a few gusts to around 25mph. Temperatures will warm from the mid-60s this morning to low 70s by Noon. Afternoon highs will top out around 76 in the metro, but will be cooler in northern Iowa. The northwest breeze continues into tonight, pulling in the cooler air.
