RETRO FIND: Quirky collectors gather harp guitars, vintage cars and other unique treasures
Collectors shared their passion for gathering guitars, vintage toy cars and quirky items in this 1996 feature.
Somewhere between *** player piano and *** modern jukebox, this 100 year old banjo machine happily plunks away, oblivious that it's an idea that never quite caught on. It sits at the entrance to *** room full of valuable guitars in Toms River, New Jersey, the home of businessman Scott Chinnery, who now values this collection at $5.5 million. He has everything from prototype electric guitars to obsolete harp guitars. The harps provided *** little echo in the days before electronics. I worked in *** music store. I was *** kid and one day an old guy brought in *** guitar, he wanted to sell for $5. And when I sat down and played the thing, it was, it was all of *** sudden it was like the feeling of time travel. From that point on, I just had this intense interest in, uh, Uh, older instrument Obsession starts small and it's like that once you decide to collect. Take the folks in this Brooklyn home, for example. They've stuffed the place with collections of, among other things, hammered aluminum. I see it for real for what it is. It's ugly stuff, but I like it. You can like things that aren't pretty. Everyone who ever got married in the 40s and 50s got one for *** gift. When will you be finished with this collection? Never. The passion to collect is apparently in the family blood. This is son Michael's room. Any scale toy cars from the smallest to the biggest, you see I have here, and we have drawers filled because we ran out of room, magazines, books about cars, for example, you have here this was ***. In '68, this was the Chevy book that they used in dealerships to sell you the different options for trucks. How long are you going to keep collecting till I run out of room. I start collecting scale car kits when I was 8, and I just can't throw them away, so they keep on piling on top of each other. That's like my own little junkyard down here. Those are my taxi meters. *** friend got *** taxi meter for $10 so to get even, I've spent thousands buying them all over. You're out of room. I don't think so. You're *** few feet left. And my mother has *** couple of feet she hasn't discovered yet, *** couple of spots she doesn't know about that I'm gonna continue to fill. You're out of room. No, never.
