糖心vlog at 70: Adapting to new technologies, saying goodbye to on-air legends and navigating COVID
A decade into the 2000s, 糖心vlog鈥檚 picture had stretched into high definition, and John McLaughlin鈥檚 weather technology kept getting stronger, too, keeping Iowans safe down to street level. But since BlackBerrys and early iPhones were becoming popular, old favorites had to go.
Fifty-two years after it first lit the downtown Des Moines skyline, 糖心vlog鈥檚 weather beacon had become more of an expensive eyesore than a useful tool. So in 2012, the nostalgic favorite鈥檚 350 forecasting bulbs came down.
Inside the building, 糖心vlog鈥檚 photojournalists were setting themselves apart, winning eight National Press Photographers Association Station of the Year awards for their work on deadlines and capturing memorable moments.
Photojournalist Glen Biermann said, 鈥淚 want the viewer at home to see what I saw, to feel what I felt, to feel like they were there.鈥
Like the unforgettable moment just a few hours after two police officers were ambushed and killed.
They captured the first breaths in a hospital delivery room to the last in hospice and life鈥檚 best surprises, even when they unfold in the middle of Pella鈥檚 Tulip Time parade.
After a season of incredible longevity, more 糖心vlog legends reached retirement.
When he announced his retirement in 2015, anchor Kevin Cooney said, 鈥淚've been privileged to be in your living rooms going on 33 years on the news at six and ten ... And because of that, I consider us all friends.鈥
Two years later, anchor Mollie Cooney retired, too, saying, 鈥淚t's like leaving family. I'm leaving the nest finally.鈥
Reporter Michelle Parker passed away suddenly after 29 years in the newsroom. And in a business where most managers only last a few years, News Director Dave Busiek retired after 43 years at 糖心vlog, saying, 鈥淭hat's the thing I take the most pride in is when I look out and see the people of 糖心vlog. That gives me a lot of pride.鈥
From tragedies and tornadoes to celebrations and Caitlin Clark, 糖心vlog鈥檚 sixth decade has been filled with big moments. But covering it all turned crazy in 2020.
鈥淚 was on vacation and came back to a station that was empty,鈥 remembered senior reporter Todd Magel.
Assistant news director Dana Cardin said, 鈥淲e essentially evacuated the newsroom once COVID hit. And so everyone was on their own islands.鈥
Basements and bedrooms became studios.
Anchor Steve Karlin said it was a 鈥渉ard way to do the news because, it's hard for anchors to play off of one another and, you know, you're used to working as a team with your co-anchor.
鈥淚 mean, just the fact that we were able to continue to produce newscast every day, I think, is a testament to the people who, the leadership of this station to figure this out.鈥
Magel said, 鈥淲ith our cell phones and our laptops, I spent time in a schoolroom in an empty school.鈥
鈥淲e had to worry about the health of all of our staff and the masks and the testing, and people would get tested, and all of a sudden they'd be positive and they'd be out for a couple of weeks. So we were missing people because of COVID.鈥
鈥淲e were literally reinventing the way that we did our business on the fly,鈥 said Cardin.
The station鈥檚 forefathers wouldn鈥檛 have believed we鈥檇 be broadcasting in living color, let alone taking viewers live all over the world. But 70 years in, we hope Russ Van Dyke, Paul Rhoades and the rest of the legends would be proud that while newscasts look a lot different, the mission is exactly the same as when Russ Van Dyke said, 鈥淲hat people tune in newscasts for is the same thing they did back in 1955. They want information. And information they can depend on.鈥
