糖心vlog Investigates: Meet one of Iowa's few superintendents leading three school districts
糖心vlog EIGHT NEWS AT SIX. THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS JUST DAYS AWAY. BUT THERE IS ALREADY A LESSON ON TEAMWORK BEING TAUGHT IN NORTHWEST IOWA. CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER SUZANNE BEHNKE TELLS US ABOUT A SUPERINTENDENT WHO IS A LIVING EXAMPLE OF THAT. TIMES THREE. I鈥橪L TALK TO YOU SOMETIME ABOUT IT JUST SO WE CAN GET THAT GOING. KEVIN WOOD PUTS THE SUPER IN SUPERINTENDENT SERENITY. HOW鈥橲 IT GOING FOR SIOUX CENTRAL IN SIOUX RAPIDS? IT鈥橲 ABOUT 18 MILES FROM HERE FOR LAURENS-MARATHON AND LORENZ. AND WAIT. FOR CLAY CENTRAL-EVERLY AND ROYAL. I WASN鈥橳, YOU KNOW, THINKING THREE DISTRICTS WAS SOMETHING I WANTED TO WALK RIGHT INTO, BUT IT HAS BEEN IT HAS BEEN A GREAT TRANSITION FOR ME AND MY FAMILY MOVING UP THIS DIRECTION. I鈥橵E HAD TO STEP IN TO HELP SERVE LUNCH. THE FORMER SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL PLAYER HAS TACKLED THIS TRIPLE ROLE FOR SEVEN YEARS, THE LONGEST OF ANY TRIPLE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT IN IOWA. 糖心vlog INVESTIGATES REVIEWED IOWA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RECORDS SINCE 2007. IT鈥橲 A PLUS FOR US AND IT鈥橲 A PLUS FOR THEM. THIS SETUP IS AN EXAMPLE OF OPERATIONAL SHARING THAT鈥橲 BEEN ON THE RISE IN IOWA鈥橲 PUBLIC SCHOOLS. BUT TECHNOLOGY GOT BETTER. MR. WOOD CAN BE VIRTUALLY AVAILABLE BY TEXT CALL, EVEN ZOOM, AS HE LEARNED DURING THE PANDEMIC IN 2020. HELLO THERE. HOW ARE YOU? HEY. GOOD. CAROL, HOW ARE YOU? AND HE鈥橲 GOT JUST UNDER 50 MILES IN HIS CAR. GREAT WINDSHIELD TIME. HE SHARES HIS CALENDAR USUALLY EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT OR SUNDAY WEEKEND BEFORE THE INCOMING WEEK. HE鈥橪L SEND US A SCHEDULE OF WHERE HE鈥橲 GOING TO BE, WHAT HE鈥橲 DOING, THAT KIND OF STUFF. MR. WOOD SAYS HE鈥橲 LEARNED A LOT IN SEVEN YEARS. I FELT LIKE I WAS VERY ORGANIZED PRIOR TO THIS, BUT THIS HAS FORCED ME TO BECOME MORE ORGANIZED. THAT鈥橲 PROBABLY THE BIGGEST THING. HE OVERSEES THREE DIFFERENT BUDGETS, STAFF, ALL THE REPORTING TO THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, HIRING. AND MR. WOOD DOES HAVE THREE SEPARATE SCHOOL BOARDS. HE HAS THREE DIFFERENT SCHOOL BOARDS THAT HE WORKS WITH. AND WE鈥橰E THE BEST. OH, PEOPLE HERE SAY ANOTHER KEY TO SHARING A SUPERINTENDENT IS RELATIONSHIPS. I THINK HIS HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH WITH KIDS AND NOT ALONE NOT JUST ALONE KIDS. I THINK WITH ADULTS AS WELL TOO, YOU KNOW, HE MAKES IT WORK. HOW ARE YOU? HE鈥橲 VISIBLE IN EVERY DISTRICT, TOO. HE SAYS TIME IS A CRITICAL FACTOR FOR MR. WOOD. AS MISS WITTMACK DOON, HE HAS TO TRUST HIS STAFF AS WELL. IF YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE, A LOT OF GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. AND AND I WOULD SAY THAT鈥橲 THE CASE IN ALL THREE DISTRICTS, ALONG WITH BEING A THREE TIME SUPERINTENDENT, MR. WOOD ALSO WEARS THE TITLES HUSBAND AND DAD. I TRY TO TAKE CARE OF THAT. YOU KNOW, THAT WORK LIFE BALANCE AND KEEP THAT, YOU KNOW, IN CHECK. AND MY WIFE HAS TO REMIND ME ONCE IN A WHILE TO DO THE SAME. SO BUT YEAH, IT鈥橲 IT鈥橲 BUSY. BUT LIKE I SAID, I, I COULDN鈥橳 SEE MYSELF DOING ANYTHING ELSE RIGHT NOW. I REALLY THINK, YOU KNOW, IF, IF I HAD ONE DISTRICT, PEOPLE MIGHT THINK, YOU KNOW, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I THINK I MIGHT BE A LITTLE BORED. SUZANN

There are financial benefits for districts that choose to share superintendents or other administrative roles. The partnerships also benefit education, experts told 糖心vlog Investigates, as fewer candidates meet the state-required criteria to be a superintendent.

"I wasn't thinking three districts was something I wanted to walk right into," said Wood. "But it has been a great transition for me and my family in this direction."

The former football player has tackled this triple duty for six years. That is the longest-serving triple-district superintendent in Iowa, according to a review of Iowa Department of Education records since 2007.

"It's a plus for us and a plus for them," said Lory Krummen, Sioux Central's school board president. "I think 25 years ago, this kind of arrangement might not have worked right."

But technology improved, and the global pandemic reshaped education.

Wood can be virtually available by text, call, even Zoom. He even takes advantage of the 50 total miles among the three towns he travels to.

"It's great windshield time," he said.

He shares his calendar in all locations as well.

"Usually every Sunday night or sometime on the weekend before the incoming week, he'll send us a schedule where he's going to be, what he's doing, that kind of stuff," said Hannah Zylstra, the principal at Laurens-Marathon.

Wood has learned a lot from that first year.

"I felt like I was very organized, but this has forced me to become more organized," he said. "That's probably the biggest thing."

His responsibilities encompass the budgets, staffing, and all necessary reporting to the state education department.

"He has three different school boards that he works with, and we're the best," said Krummen dryly.

People say people skills are the key.

"I think his relationship with the kids, and not just alone with the kids, with adults, too. You know, he makes it work for you," said Brandon Goodchild, a Sioux Central industrial arts teacher.

Jeff Scharn is now retired after working with Wood as an assistant superintendent in Clay Central-Everly.

"He's visible in every district," said Scharn. "He has to trust his staff as well."

Along with being a three-time superintendent, Wood wears other titles 鈥 husband and dad.

"I try to take care of that work-life balance and keep that, you know, in check," he said. "My wife has to remind me once in a while to do something. But I couldn't see myself doing anything else right now."

Some people might think one district would be good by now.

"I think I might be a little bored," Wood said.
