SELFIE IN A NEWSCAST. WELL, AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE TODAY FOR THE CITY OF KNOXVILLE. THE NEW OWNERS OF THE HISTORIC KINLOCH STADIUM CUT THE RIBBON ON THEIR PLANS TO TRANSFORM THE STRUCTURE INTO A COMMUNITY CENTER. vlog SENIOR REPORTER TODD MAGEL SHOWS US THE PLANS. IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE ANYONE HAS SAT IN THESE HISTORIC BLEACHERS TO WATCH A GAME HERE AT KINLOCH STADIUM, BUT NOW THAT’S ABOUT TO CHANGE. WE ARE ACTUALLY GETTING A LOT OF ENTHUSIASM, A LOT OF SUPPORT, DANIEL HUFFINE SAYS. IT’S A DREAM COME TRUE TO ONE. THEY’RE CUTTING THE RIBBON TO MARK A BIG CHANGE FOR THE HISTORIC KINLOCH STADIUM. THE KNOXVILLE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IS NOW THE OWNER OF THE 87 YEAR OLD SPORTS COMPLEX, AND THEY HAVE PLANS TO TURN IT INTO A MASSIVE NEW COMMUNITY CENTER. IT FEELS GREAT BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY IDEAS THAT WE WANT TO IMPLEMENT AND THAT WE WANT TO, YOU KNOW, ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO COME AND USE THIS FACILITY AND JUST THINGS FOR THE COMMUNITY. SO IT FEELS REALLY AWESOME TO BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS FOR OUR COMMUNITY. THE $7 MILLION PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO SAVE MANY OF THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURES, LIKE THE OLD STONE CONCESSION BUILDING, THE GATE TOWERS, AND THE ORNATE POOL BUILDING THAT USED TO OVERLOOK THE TOWN’S SWIMMING POOL. BUT THERE IS ROOM FOR UPDATES, INCLUDING A HUGE COMMUNITY CENTER NEXT TO THE WATER TOWER. THIS SUMMER, THEY PLAN TO START RAISING MONEY WITH FOOTBALL GAMES, SOCCER GAMES AND CONCERTS. YOU CAN IMAGINE THIS CORNER BEING A PARKING LOT, SO WE’RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN. PENNY SUMMER HAS BEEN WORKING ON THE KINLOCH STADIUM PROJECT FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. SHE’S THRILLED IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING. WE HAVE A LOT OF GREAT GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS THAT NOT ONLY HELPED BUILD IT, BUT THEN ENDED UP PLAYING ON IT AND THEIR CHILDREN AND THEIR GRANDCHILDREN. SO IT RUNS DEEP. ONCE THEY HAVE THE MILLIONS THEY NEED FOR RENOVATIONS, THEY HOPE TO HAVE THIS DREAM PROJECT READY TO GO IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS IN KNOXVILLE.
