Iowa weather: Expect wind chills down to -45 degrees overnight
vlog DOT COM. TIME TO CHECK BACK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST ZANE SATRE AND ZAIN IN DECEMBER WE WERE ALL, YOU KNOW, KIND OF UPSET. WE WEREN’T SEEING A LOT OF SNOW. I THINK PERSONALLY WE’VE GOT ENOUGH SNOW TO LAST US FOR THE REST OF THE WINTER. NOW WE YOU KNOW, WE JUMPED AHEAD. YEAH. AS WE’VE GONE THROUGH THIS PAST WEEK, IN FACT, BY QUITE A WIDE MARGIN HERE. WE’RE STACKING UP SO MUCH SNOW OVER THE PAST WEEK OR SO THAT WE’RE NOW PRETTY CLOSE TO A ON A HIGH UP ON A LIST. THAT’S NOT A LIST THAT WE GET ON VERY OFTEN HERE. YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN A STAT ROLLING AROUND ON SOCIAL MEDIA THE PAST FEW DAYS ABOUT HOW THIS IS ONE OF THE SNOWIEST FIVE DAY STRETCHES ON RECORD. WELL, WHAT IF WE JUST LOOKED AT SNOWIEST WEEKS ON RECORD SEVEN DAY PERIODS? WE’RE GETTING PRETTY HIGH ON THAT LIST TOO. WE HAD A LITTLE BIT MORE SNOW TODAY, SO NOW SINCE SUNDAY, 23IN OF SNOW AT LEAST HERE IN THE DES MOINES METRO AREA. WE HAVE A LONG PERIOD OF RECORD HERE IN DES MOINES, SO WE CAN LOOK BACK A LONG TIME. WELL, THERE’S ONLY TWO SEVEN DAY PERIODS THAT HAVE HAD MORE SNOW IN HISTORY. BACK IN MID-MARCH OF 1923 AND THEN BACK AT THE END OF 1941 INTO THE FIRST DAY OF 1942, HAD A LITTLE BIT MORE SNOW THAN WHAT WE JUST HAD OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS. LOOKS COOL IF YOU’RE NOT OUTSIDE IN IT. WE HAD A LOT OF PICTURES HERE FROM SOUTHERN IOWA, ESPECIALLY EARLIER THIS MORNING. THE BEAUTIFUL ROLLING HILLS AND THAT PART OF THE STATE. JULIE HAD A REALLY NICE VIEW FROM. LOOKS LIKE HER BACK DECK DOWN IN RINGGOLD COUNTY OF SOME SUN DOGS. THAT SUN PILLAR THERE OF ALL THOSE LOFTED ICE CRYSTALS BLOWING AROUND IN THE SKY EARLIER TODAY. BEAUTIFUL. LOOK THERE. LESS BEAUTIFUL LOOK FROM THIS VANTAGE POINT. THIS IS LESS THAN AN HOUR AGO ON HIGHWAY 44. SO THIS IS OUT. GUTHRIE COUNTY BETWEEN PANORA AND GUTHRIE CENTER. ONE OF THE D.O.T. PLOWS. YOU SEE, THE VISIBILITY DOESN’T LOOK THAT BAD, BUT LOOK AT THAT. THIS IS THE DITCH. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE DITCH FULLY DRIFTED ALL OVER WITH SNOW DRIFTS EXTENDING ACROSS THE ROAD THERE. SO THIS IS WHAT ALL THOSE PLOW DRIVERS ARE UP AGAINST, ESPECIALLY IN THOSE RURAL AREAS OUTSIDE HERE THIS EVENING, A LOT OF THE COUNTIES HAVE HAD TO PULL THEIR PLOWS EARLIER TODAY. NOT GOING TO BE BACK OUT THERE BATTLING THOSE DRIFTS UNTIL TOMORROW. OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW. NOT DEALING WITH ANY FALLING SNOW THOUGH. BUT IT’S STILL BLOWING AROUND THOSE FLASHING GOLD NUMBERS. YOUR GUSTS. SO THEY’RE STILL ABOVE 30MPH IN SOME PLACES. NOT NECESSARILY BLIZZARD CRITERIA ANYMORE, BUT THERE’S ALREADY TONS OF SNOW, SO EVEN IF THE VISIBILITY DOESN’T DROP ANYMORE, YOU’VE STILL GOT A LOT OF THAT DRIFTING ACTION. LIKE YOU JUST SAW. HERE’S OUR NEXT BATTLE WIND CHILLS MOSTLY 40 DEGREES BELOW ZERO OR COLDER ALREADY THIS EVENING, AND GOING TO STAY THAT WAY FOR FOR A WHILE HERE. BASICALLY EACH NIGHT IS GOING TO BE IN WIND CHILL WARNING TERRITORY. WIND CHILLS AS COLD AS -45, ESPECIALLY TONIGHT, BUT THAT WIND CHILL WARNING ACROSS MOST OF THE STATE WILL LAST ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THURSDAY MORNING OF NEXT WEEK. WE’RE ONLY ON SATURDAY NIGHT. WE’RE JUST STARTING THIS THING. SO LET’S GO THROUGH THE REST OF YOUR SATURDAY NIGHT HERE. THESE ARE YOUR GUSTS, THOSE NUMBERS. THEY’RE. GOING TO BE IN THE 30 MILE PER HOUR RANGE STILL THROUGH THE REST OF TONIGHT. EVEN ONCE WE BACK THOSE WIND SPEEDS DOWN A LITTLE BIT TOMORROW. STILL SOME 25 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS. SO NO LONGER, YOU KNOW, BLIZZARD WINDS. BUT THERE’S SO MUCH SNOW OUT THERE TO BLOW AROUND UNTIL THAT SNOW FULLY KIND OF CRUSTS OVER AND HARDENS A LITTLE BIT, YOU’RE STILL GOING TO HAVE BLOWING AND DRIFTING ISSUES OUTSIDE THE CITY. AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY TOMORROW. NOT AS BAD AS TODAY, BUT STILL NOT GREAT EITHER. NO MORE NEW SNOW THOUGH. JUST KIND OF A SUN CLOUD MIX AT TIMES HERE AS WE GO THROUGH TOMORROW AND THEN INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. WIND CHILLS TONIGHT WILL HANG OUT IN THE 40S BELOW ZERO ONCE WE HEAD TOWARDS TOMORROW. DURING THE DAY, THIS IS ALL THE MORE YOU’RE GOING TO IMPROVE. 20S BELOW ZERO FOR YOUR SUNDAY AFTERNOON. DOON. AND WE’VE GOT A LOT OF DAYS LIKE THAT IN THE DAYS TO COME. THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T WANT TO MESS AROUND WITH THAT. IF YOU GET EXPOSED SKIN, YOU’RE STUCK OUTSIDE. YOU CAN HAVE WIND CHILL AND AS LITTLE OR YOU CAN HAVE FROSTBITE AND AS LITTLE AS TEN MINUTES IN THESE SORT OF WIND CHILL CONDITIONS, SEVERE SUSTAINED COLD, NOT ONLY TOMORROW BUT TOMORROW NIGHT AND INTO MONDAY AND INTO MONDAY NIGHT. IT WON’T BE UNTIL TUESDAY THAT WE FINALLY GET OUT OF THESE NEGATIVE DOUBLE DIGIT WIND CHILLS. AND EVEN ONCE WE GET PAST THAT MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK ONWARD, IT’S STILL NOT BALMY BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION. WE ONLY WARM UP TO HIGHS IN THE TEENS. THERE IS ONE LITTLE SYSTEM THAT COULD BRING US SOME SNOW ON THURSDAY. IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A BIG, POWERFUL SYSTEM. NOTHING LIKE WHAT WE SAW THIS WEEK, BUT AT LEAST THAT’S YOUR ONE CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION. OTHERWISE WE ARE GOING TO BE MAIN
