Major construction on I-35/80 and Hickman Road to cause detours

Major construction on I-35/80 and Hickman Road to cause detours
THAT’S COMING UP IN A LITTLE BIT. LAURA, AND THANK YOU. WELL, CONSTRUCTION AT I-35, I-80 AND HICKMAN ROAD IS SHIFTING INTO HIGH GEAR THIS SPRING. YEAH, IT REALLY IS. THIS MEANS SOME MAJOR DETOURS FOR DRIVERS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE METRO. vlog SENIOR REPORTER TODD MAGEL IS LIVE ALONG THE INTERSTATE AND CLIVE TO SHOW US SOME OF THE WORK BEING DONE ON THIS $94 MILLION PROJECT. HI, TODD. HI, JODI AND LAURA. TAKE A LOOK BEHIND ME. WE’RE ON UNIVERSITY. THIS IS 3580 LOOKING NORTH. BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC MOVING VERY SLOWLY. THAT’S WHY YOU’RE SEEING LOTS OF EARTH MOVING OUT THIS WAY. THE D-O-T SAYS IT’S TIME TO PACK SOME PATIENCE AS CREWS WORK TO WIDEN THE INTERSTATE FROM THE AIR. IT’S EASY TO SEE HOW VAST THE DOUGHERTY INTERSTATE PROJECT IS HERE. ALONG 3580. IT’S ALL PART OF A $94 MILLION PLAN TO WIDEN THE HIGHWAY LANES AND BRIDGES NORTH AND SOUTH OF HICKMAN ROAD, AND BY 2028, THE FINAL TOUCH WILL BE A NEW DIVERGING DIAMOND INTERSECTION THAT WILL RUN UNDER THE WIDER INTERSTATE AT HICKMAN. 100,000 VEHICLES A DAY MAKE THIS THE BUSIEST STRETCH OF INTERSTATE IN IOWA. THE GOAL IS TO MAKE MORE ROOM FOR ALL THAT TRAFFIC. I THINK IT’S DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT’S SO BUSY, AND THAT HAS BECOME A MESS A COUPLE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY, ESPECIALLY IN THE AFTERNOONS. THE D-O-T HAS ALREADY BEGUN MOVING DIRT TO BUILD UP ROOM FOR EXTRA OUTSIDE LANES AND WIDER BRIDGES. ON 3580, TRAFFIC WILL SHIFT LANES FROM TIME TO TIME DURING PHASE ONE OF CONSTRUCTION THIS SUMMER. YOU CAN SEE THE NEW WHITE LANE MARKINGS. THE D-O-T IS ALSO CLOSING INTERSTATE RAMPS DURING THE PROJECT, SOMETIMES FOR JUST ONE NIGHT, SOMETIMES FOR MUCH LONGER. WE HAVE SOME RAMPS THAT WILL BE CLOSED FOR 100 DAYS, SOME FOR 90, SOME FOR ABOUT 110. IT DEPENDS ON WHICH RAMP IT IS. DETOURS AND RAMP CLOSURES WILL BE ANNOUNCED TWO WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME, SO PLAN AHEAD. ALL THESE PROJECTS WILL ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC TIMES THAT WE HAVE FOR PEOPLE AND MAKE IT ULTIMATELY A SAFER FREEWAY FOR EVERYBODY TO USE. A DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE INTERSTATE HERE WILL BE CLOSED AT DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THIS CONSTRUCTION. IT WILL BE CLOSED FROM WHERE WE’RE STANDING ALL THE WAY UP TO HIGHWAY 141, JUST NORTH OF US. KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU WANT MORE INFORMATION, YOU CAN GO TO THE DOC DOT WEBSITE. THEY HAVE ALL THE UPDATED CLOSURES AND DETOURS THERE. WE’RE LIVE IN WEST DES MOINE
