Annette Kelley, an 83-year-old retired teacher living in Marshalltown, was surprised by her caretakers at Glenwood Place, her assisted living facility, with a chance to return to teaching at Fisher Elementary School through the Dare To Dream program.
Kelley spent over 20 years of her life at the front of the classroom and continues to engage in teacher-like activities at her facility, such as organizing supplies and ensuring everyone is accounted for.
Melinda Beard, one of her caretakers, said, "She likes to organize things as far as like our totes and our crayons, markers, papers."
When surprised with the opportunity to teach again, Kelley responded enthusiastically, saying, "Well, I think I can do that."
Having taught throughout Iowa and Minnesota, Kelley expressed her enduring passion for teaching, stating, "I never lost that skill, no."
She added, "I'll always keep it," emphasizing that her love for teaching remains strong despite her retirement.
Kelley believes that the key to teaching is simple: "I just love them. That's all you have to do is love the kids and they'll love you."
