What is rapid intensification during hurricane season?

What is rapid intensification during hurricane season?
OKAY, WE’RE GOING TO BE A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE. AND SO QUICKLY, SO QUICKLY, I HAVE A QUESTION. HELENE WAS IN THIS KIND OF SAME LIKE REGION OF WATER, PRESUMABLY SIMILAR TEMPERATURES. RIGHT. WHAT ABOUT THIS ONE? IS MAKING IT INTENSIFY AS QUICKLY AND AS THE ATMOSPHERE IS IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STATE, NORTH SOUTH, EAST AND WEST OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. SO IT’S IN THE SAME SPOT. WATER TEMPERATURES ARE HOT, BUT BUT THERE’S A VERY DIFFERENT VENTILATION IN THE UPPER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE. SO THAT’S ALSO GOING TO PROTECT THE CAROLINAS FROM GETTING ANOTHER FLOODING EVENT. SO IT’S ALL KIND OF WORKING IN A DIFFERENT WAY. LET’S LOOK AT THE SATELLITE IMAGERY AND JUST KIND OF SEE WHERE WE’RE AT. RIGHT NOW. THE LATEST ADVISORY CAME IN ABOUT AN HOUR AGO. UPGRADING MILTON TO A CATEGORY FIVE INTENSITY MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE AT 160 MILES. AN HOUR NOW JUST TO ADDRESS THE SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES. IT’S OCTOBER, AFTER ALL, BUT WE STILL HAVE MID 80S OUT AHEAD OF THE STORM SYSTEM. THAT IS PLENTY SUFFICIENT FOR NOT ONLY DEVELOPMENT, BUT FOR MAINTAINING INTENSIFICATION. NOW I JUST WANT TO SHOW YOU THE RAW DATA FROM THE HURRICANE HUNTERS. THERE’S THE CENTER OF CIRCULATION, THE HURRICANE HUNTERS ARE HEADED INBOUND. THEY’RE ON KIND OF A FINAL APPROACH FOR ONE MORE CORE PASS BEFORE THEY HAVE TO GO LAND AND REFUEL. THIS DATA IS THE SUMMER. IT IS A MICROWAVE BEAM THAT THEY ACTUALLY MEASURE WIND SPEEDS BASED OFF OF OF ALL THINGS, THE SEA SPRAY ON THE OCEAN. EARLIER, THEY ACTUALLY REGISTERED WINDS WELL OVER 160 MILES AN HOUR. JUST TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, HURRICANE CENTER WENT A LITTLE MORE CONSERVATIVE JUST BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE DO THIS ONE ADDITIONAL CORE PASS AND SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. SO IT’S A CATEGORY FIVE. NOW THE EXPECTATION IS AS IT APPROACHES FLORIDA, THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF WIND SHEAR WHICH WOULD WEAKEN IT DOWN TO A CATEGORY THREE OR EVEN A CATEGORY FOUR MAKES LANDFALL LATE WEDNESDAY, CROSSES OVER OUR AREA AS A CATEGORY ONE OR CATEGORY TWO STORM SYSTEM, AND THEN EXITS OFF THE EAST COAST. BUT IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE IN OUR AREA, WIND GUSTS ARE GOING TO BE RUNNING HURRICANE FORCE 74 TO 110 MILES AN HOUR, WHICH MEANS BY 9 A.M. WEDNESDAY, YOU NEED TO BE WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO BE. HERE’S THE ARRIVAL TIMES FOR THE WORST OF THE WEATHER IN YELLOW ORLANDO SOUTH AND WEST. WEDNESDAY EARLY EVENING. THE WORST OF THE WEATHER MOVES IN WEDNESDAY LATE EVENING FROM ORLANDO NORTH AND EAST. OKAY, BUT AGAIN BY 9 A.M. OR SO ON WEDNESDAY I WANT YOU LOCKED IN IN YOUR SAFE SPACE. WHEREVER YOU’RE GOING TO RIDE THIS STORM OUT, BECAUSE IT WILL GET PROGRESSIVELY WORSE KIND OF HOUR BY HOUR THEREAFTER. THAT SAI

Hurricane Milton rapidly strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday and was forecast to become a Category 5 storm on a path toward Florida, threatening a dangerous storm surge in Tampa Bay and setting the stage for potential mass evacuations less than two weeks after a catastrophic Hurricane Helene swamped the coastline. What is rapid intensification?Rapid intensification is defined as an increase in the maximum sustained winds of a tropical cyclone of at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period. In order for that rapid intensification to occur, a few ingredients are needed:Very warm sea temperatures — generally over 86 degreesLow wind shear, which means winds don't change speed or direction quickly with height in the atmospherePlenty of humid air aroundStorms can and do intensify rapidly. Michael intensified from a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds to a Category 5 right before landfall. National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham says taking notice of warnings and being able to act quickly is vital."When you look at the hurricanes, 150 mph or greater, that's hit this country in the last 100 years, every one of them, there's been nine of them total on record 150 mph or greater, the strongest storms, they were all tropical storms or less three days out. Shorten your plans. We have to have conversations about shortening our plans. We gotta be ready to go. These storms form quickly. They can rapidly intensify. You have to be able to take heed of those warnings and go where you need to go and stay safe really quickly," Graham said.

In order for that rapid intensification to occur, a few ingredients are needed:

  • Very warm sea temperatures — generally over 86 degrees
  • Low wind shear, which means winds don't change speed or direction quickly with height in the atmosphere
  • Plenty of humid air around

Storms can and do intensify rapidly. Michael intensified from a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds to a Category 5 right before landfall.
