MLB safety proposal covers testing, physical distancing and more for playing amid virus pandemic
Major League Baseball's plans to return to playing games with a revamped process that includes around 10,000 COVID-19 tests a week.
The plans, revealed in a memo to players, also account for revamping stadiums and pushing physical distancing among players and staff. That means no spitting, hugging, high-fiving, etc. The measures come from a draft of the league's health-and-safety manual, and The Athletic. The measures cover games, travel, hygiene and more.
Under the new rules, players would be encouraged to shower at home after games. Players will also not be allowed to use ride-sharing apps on the road or use taxi cabs. And pitchers would be expected to bring their own game balls to toss during bullpen sessions.
Players would also have multiple temperature checks each day and also be required to wear masks — a requirement that wouldn't apply when they're on the field and during strenuous activities, according to the plan.
Among the other requirements, the document stated players would also have to be 6 feet apart in the dugout.
