THE WORLD ARE GOING FOR GOLD IN DES MOINES FOR THE NATIONAL SENIOR GAMES. vlog’S OLIVIA TYLER SHOWS US THE EVENT FEATURES MORE THAN 12,000 ATHLETES FROM ALL 50 STATES AND 12 COUNTRIES. TODAY KICKS OFF THE NATIONAL 2025 SENIOR GAMES, WHERE SEASONED ATHLETES FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE HERE IN DES MOINES FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS TO SHOW OFF THEIR SKILLS AND LIVE THEIR BEST LIVES. THREE, TWO ONE GO! DESPITE THE RAIN THIS MORNING, HUNDREDS FLOCKED TO THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS TO RUN A5K GO BIG RED. AND THOSE THAT WEREN’T RACING WERE CHEERING ON THEIR LOVED ONES. THE SENIOR GAMES IS A 12 DAY OLYMPIC STYLE MULTI-SPORT EVENT. IT FEATURES 12,500 ATHLETES AGED 50 OR OLDER. THOSE ATHLETES COME FROM ALL 50 STATES AND 12 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. NOW THEY SAY AS YOU GET OLDER, YOU LIVE IN YOUR GOLDEN YEARS. SO IF IT’S TRULY OUR GOLDEN YEARS, WE WE SHOULD BE IN THE BEST OF HEALTH. THE GAMES AIM TO PROMOTE COMPETITIVE SPORTS AND PHYSICAL FITNESS, NO MATTER THE AGE. THE OLDEST ATHLETE COMPETING IS 101 YEARS OLD. ORGANIZERS SAY IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET ACTIVE. WE HAVE 25 SPORTS, SO THERE’S THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT GOING ON PICKLEBALL, SWIMMING, BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, YOU NAME IT. AND WHILE SOME ARE IN IT JUST TO FINISH, IT’S ABOUT FINISHING WHAT YOU START. IT’S NOT A RACE. I HAVE STARTED THAT I HAVE NOT COMPLETED. OTHERS ARE IN IT TO WIN IT. I CAME IN THIRD IN MY AGE GROUP. MY GOAL WAS TOP FIVE, BUT NO MATTER HOW THESE RUNNERS PLACE, THEY SAY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO JUST KEEP MOVING. YOU CAN’T HAVE THE BEST LIFE WITHOUT GOOD HEALTH. The National Senior Games have commenced in Des Moines, bringing together over 12,500 athletes ages 50 and older from all 50 states and 12 countries for a 12-day Olympic-style multisport event.Despite the rain, hundreds gathered at the Iowa State Fairgrounds to participate in a 5K run, the first event of the games."They say, as you get older, you're living your golden years," said Vincent Gulley from Dallas. "So, if it's truly our golden years, we should be in the best of health."While some participants aim to complete their races, others strive for victory. Christine Comito from Iowa says she reached her goal."I came in third in my age group," Comito said. "My goal was Top 5." The games are expected to generate over $32 million for the Des Moines area and will conclude on Aug. 4. A flame arrival ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the Iowa State Capitol, celebrating the opening of the games with a torch lighting the ceremonial cauldron.
