National Senior Games unite athletes in Des Moines
The National Senior Games have commenced in Des Moines, bringing together over 12,500 athletes ages 50 and older from all 50 states and 12 countries for a 12-day Olympic-style multisport event.
Despite the rain, hundreds gathered at the Iowa State Fairgrounds to participate in a 5K run, the first event of the games.
"They say, as you get older, you're living your golden years," said Vincent Gulley from Dallas. "So, if it's truly our golden years, we should be in the best of health."
While some participants aim to complete their races, others strive for victory. Christine Comito from Iowa says she reached her goal.
"I came in third in my age group," Comito said. "My goal was Top 5."
The games are expected to generate over $32 million for the Des Moines area and will conclude on Aug. 4. A flame arrival ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the Iowa State Capitol, celebrating the opening of the games with a torch lighting the ceremonial cauldron.
