New Iowa coach Ben McCollum and his transfers from Drake may have had a ton of success, but the mentality hasn't changed just because they are in the Big Ten."They need to have a chip on their shoulder. You need to play with a little edge. I think that when you take over a position, there's naturally a great deal of excitement, and I think if you're not careful, it can create a sense of arrival, and I said this at the Big Ten meetings. Understanding that I've always worked better with a chip on my shoulder, like either doubted or whatever, and same with those guys, and so making sure that we continue to have that edge and don't have a sense of arrival, more so than anybody in the league, that's what we're going to need to have to be successful in the Big Ten."McCollum brought over six Drake players, headlined by Bennett Stirtz, the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Also coming over from Drake are Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Joey Matteoni, and Tavion Banks. McCollum said he has still not decided on discipline for Banks, who was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct on Oct. 12 in Iowa City.Transfers Brendan Hausen and Alvaro Folgueiras will be impact players. Freshman Trevin Jirak, a three-time state champ out of Valley, has turned heads as well. In fact, McCollum says he is the player who has impressed the most."Trevin has been great. He's really gotten himself into shape. He can really, really pass it. The game slows down for him. He can shoot. Yesterday, I think he was two for two or three for three from three. Just does a lot of good things. Great attitude. That's probably even one of the more overwhelming things that I didn't expect. You know if guys are winners, they're naturally going to win. But his attitude is through the roof. He's been great in the preseason."The season starts Tuesday, Nov. 4, with a 7:30 home game against Robert Morris. The game is on BTN.
