While Disney has helped popularize fairy tales with cartoon musicals ranging from “Beauty and the Beast” to “Aladdin,” the company has some competition in live-action remakes. Disney has already voiced plans to do so with its 1989 classic of the “The Little Mermaid,” but that story and many other classic tales are in the public domain due to expired copyrights. That’s led other other production companies to make their own versions. That’s what MVP Studios is doing with “A Little Mermaid,” an adaptation based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The new studio released a trailer of its movie Thursday. Universal also wanted to release its own live-action movie of the story starring actress Chloë Moretz, but she told The Hollywood Reporter that she was dropping out of upcoming projects to reassess her role in the industry. While Disney may be later than these rivals for this classic, its version may be worth the wait. According to Entertainment Weekly, the creator and star of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, is working with composer Alan Menken, who has won eight Academy Awards for his original music, on Disney’s remake.
