Teen builds jaw-dropping Halloween set
BLOWS US AWAY. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES. WELCOME TO PINE RIDGE ROAD IN NEWTON, WHICH HONESTLY LOOKS LIKE A HOLLYWOOD SOUNDSTAGE. I JUST STARTED BUILDING ONE DAY AND KIND OF LEARNED AS I WENT AT 14 YEARS OLD. TED LAHEY IS THE MASTERMIND BEHIND IT ALL. IT STARTED AS A PIRATE SHIP LAST YEAR AND JUST KIND OF EVOLVED. I THOUGHT, WELL, I COULD MAKE A CASTLE AND I COULD HAVE THEM IN A BATTLE. AND SO CONSTRUCTION ON THE CASTLE STARTED IN THE BACKYARD. AND AS IT GREW AND GREW, DAD DID HAVE SOME DOUBTS. I MEAN, OUR FRONT YARD IS THE SIZE OF A POSTAGE STAMP. AND I SAID, OH, BUT I DON’T THINK THIS IS GOING TO FIT. AND IT JUST MADE IT. WE WE CONTEMPLATED CUTTING A CORNER OF THE STEP OFF JUST SO WE COULD GET IT TO FIT IN, BUT AS A FAMILY, THEY MADE IT WORK. OH WOW. THAT IS SIGNIFICANT. WELL, I’M PRETTY AMAZED. YEAH, I, I COULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED HE WOULD CREATE SOMETHING LIKE THIS AS A 14 YEAR OLD. WHAT’S REALLY INCREDIBLE IS THAT NONE OF THIS IS FROM A KIT OR AMAZON. IT ALL CAME FROM TED’S OWN IMAGINATION AND INGENUITY. THIS IS FOAM INSULATION BOARD THAT I CUT THE GROOVES OUT OF WITH A HOT KNIFE, AND THEN I SPRAYED STARTER FLUID ON IT AND PUT A TORCH TO IT AND IT BURNED. YOU CAN’T HELP BUT BE IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY TED IMAGINED. AND THEN PROBLEM SOLVED. HIS WAY TO THIS AND THIS. SO THIS IS TRIAL AND ERROR. YEAH, YEAH IT IS. THERE’S NO YOUTUBE ON HOW TO BUILD A PIRATE SHIP FROM THE SMOKING CANNONS MADE OF PVC PIPE AND POOL NOODLES TO THE TREASURE CHEST MADE OF A RECONSTRUCTED PALATE AND EXPANSION FOAM AND TWINKLE LIGHTS, SPRAY PAINTED GOLD. I FEEL LIKE YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY HERE TO GET SOME, LIKE, AP CREDIT OR SOMETHING. OH, YEAH. THIS IS THIS IS AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF COLLEGE. YEAH. AND HERE’S THE KICKER. ED MARIA. YOU KNOW, AFTER ALL THESE HUGE, LIKE, PROPS THAT HE BUILT IN HIS FRONT YARD, I SAID, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART? AND HE SAYS TO ME, OH, ACTUALLY, IT’S THAT GIANT SKELETON BUSTING OUT OF THE ROOF. YEAH, YEAH. WHICH HE ALSO BUILT AND GOT UP THERE AND PUT TOGETHER. SO, YOU KNOW, GENIUS. AND HE COULD BE MAKING SIX FIGURES RIGHT NOW BUILDING HOLLYWOOD OR BROADWAY SETS. BUT I’M THINKING HE MIGHT BE DESTINED FOR SOMETHING EVEN BIGGER THAN THAT BIG SKELETON. MARY CAUGHT MY EYE THE MINUTE YOU YOU SHOWED IT. BOOM. THERE WE GO. I LOVE HOW MARY. I LOVE HOW YOU SUGGESTED THE AP CLASSES. THAT’S SO YOU. YOU’RE SUCH A MOTHER. AND HE THOUGHT, YEAH, GIVE THAT KID SOME CREDIT. I LOVE IT, ESPECIALLY FOR THE THE LAST MINUTE. ADD THE SKELETON. SO, SO MARY. I WANT TO KNOW. IT’S A WONDERFULLY DECORATED PLACE. WHAT KIND OF CANDY ARE THEY GIVING OUT ON HALLOWEEN? I, I ASKED HIS MOM. I SAID, THIS REALLY PUTS THE PRESSURE ON YOU, YOU KNOW? AND SHE’S I KNOW SHE’S WE HAVE LIKE 300 TRICK OR TREATERS.
