Wednesday, Oct. 2 marked a sad anniversary for the town of Fort Dodge.It's been five years since Pastor Al Henderson was murdered.Henderson was a senior pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church. On Oct. 2, 2019, he was attacked outside his church and died from his injuries.Joshua Pendleton was arrested and charged with the murder. In April 2021, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.Henderson left behind a long-lasting legacy in Fort Dodge. He was the chaplain for the Fort Dodge Police Department, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Webster County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol Post 7. In 2014, he founded the organization Serving Our Servants, or SOS, to provide support for local law enforcement and first responders. Following Henderson's death, his family, along with SOS, began Pay It Forward Friday — a day to spread kindness in the community and honor Henderson's legacy of service to others, held the first Friday of October. The goal of Pay It Forward Friday is to demonstrate acts of kindness -- big or small -- in the community.Last Friday, SOS and Henderson's family set up at City Square Park in downtown Fort Dodge for ice cream and fellowship after the Fort Dodge Senior High homecoming parade. St. Paul Lutheran Church also hosted a blood drive in honor of Pay It Forward Friday and welcomed 28 donors. During the event at the park, SOS will be collecting donations for a memorial park shelter to be built at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. The shelter, to be called "Pastor Al Pavilion," will include pillars to represent the public servants he dedicated his life to.
