A gunman opened fire on a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia Wednesday morning.Eyewitnesses said House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise was shot. As this news broke online and on television, lawmakers reached out to offer thoughts and prayers. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords took to social media to say: "My heart is with my former colleagues, their families & staff, and the US Capitol Police- public servants and heroes today and every day."Giffords was shot in the head while meeting with constituents outside a store in Arizona in 2011. Six people were killed in that shooting. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan stated that "the hearts of the whole House are with @SteveScalise, the brave Capitol police, staff, and all those who were in harm's way."Steny Hoyer, Democratic Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, wrote "thinking of my friend," and said he was monitoring reports. Rep. Eric Swalwell asked for prayers for his GOP colleagues, staff and Capitol Police. Senator Todd Young, from Indiana, and Rep. John Shimkus, of Illinois, said he was praying as well. Rep. Patrick Meehan asked for prayers from their followers, along with Rep. Rodney Davis.Rep. Ann McLane Kuster of New Hampshire said she was "horrified by violence at congressional baseball practice." Former representative Reid Ribble called Scalise "one of the most decent and kind people I served with in congress."Rep. Tim Murphy, of Pennsylvania, tweeted "our prayers are with Congressman Scalise and the aides involved in this morning's shooting," before adding "the inflammatory, hateful language has to stop."Rep. Steve Pearce, of New Mexico, said he was there when the gunshots broke out. He said he was unhurt but asked for prayers for those involved. Congressman Steven Palazzo sent a message out stating that he is "safe and fine." Rep. Bradley Byrne said the incident should serve as a reminder of the "hard work, dedication, and sacrifice" of the Capitol Police. Rep. Scott Tipton echoed the praise for the Capitol Police, as did Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.President Donald Trump called Scalise a "true friend and patriot," saying he was badly injured but will fully recover. Vice President Mike Pencesaid he and his wife were also praying.
