Hundreds of thousands across Iowa are without power Tuesday due to destruction caused by Monday’s powerful derecho. The MidAmerican Energy website has a list safety tips for residents without power. Stay safe and keep these in mind while waiting for power to be restored:When outside, avoid downed power lines and poles.Assume all fallen power lines are energized.To prevent fires, turn off and unplug heat-producing appliances (irons, coffee pots, hair straighteners, etc.).Unplug electrical devices to avoid damage to them.When possible, use a flashlight instead of candles to avoid fire risks.Leave buildings immediately if you smell natural gas.A list of helpful supplies to gather can be found here.Information on food safety during a power outage can be found here.
