Cruising one year later: Young Iowan gaining strength with each ride on specialized bike
THIS SEASON STARTS JUNE 7TH. THE PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A GOLF TOURNAMENT. OVER THE YEARS, THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN DONATED TO CHILDREN’S CHARITIES HERE IN CENTRAL IOWA. AS vlog ALYX SACKS LEARNED, THE TOURNAMENT MAY COME ONCE A YEAR, BUT ITS IMPACT CAN BE LIFE CHANGING. BUCKLED UP AND READY TO RIDE. FIVE YEAR OLD BRIGGS HITS THE TRAIL AT HIS FAVORITE PARK. SHOW HIM HOW YOU GO. AND THIS THREE WHEEL BIKE IS SPECIAL. LET’S GO DOWN HERE AND THEN WE’LL TURN AROUND. BRIGGS WAS BORN WITH A GENE MUTATION AND GRAY MATTER HETEROTOPIA. IT’S RESULTED IN BALANCE ISSUES AND LOW MUSCLE TONE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HIS BODY. HE GOES TO A PHYSICAL THERAPIST, AND HE WAS RIDING A BIKE THERE. THIS SAME THREE WHEELED OR THREE WHEELED MODEL THAT HE GOT THROUGH THE VARIETY CLUB, AND HE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. YOU WANT TO GO RIDE OVER BY MOM BRIGGS? HIS FAMILY KNEW HE WOULD BENEFIT FROM A BIKE LIKE THAT AT HOME. THEY APPLIED FOR HELP THROUGH VARIETY’S MOBILITY PROGRAM AND AT LAST YEAR’S PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC, HE RECEIVED A GIFT THAT CHANGED HIS WORLD. HE WAS GIVEN THIS SPECIALIZED BIKE WORTH ABOUT $3,500. BUILT JUST FOR HIM AND HIS NEEDS. MADE POSSIBLE THANKS TO PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL GROUP AND LONGTIME SUPPORTERS SALLY AND CARL HARRIS. IT WAS AWESOME TO SEE THE SMILE ON HIS FACE, AND YOU CAN TELL BY THAT SMILE ONE YEAR LATER, HE ABSOLUTELY ADORES IT. NOT ONLY IS THIS THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HE NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY, HE’S BEEN WORKING ON HIS BALANCE, WORKING ON HIS STRENGTH. IT GIVES HIM THE FREEDOM TO JUST BE A KID. THIS ALLOWS HIM TO RIDE BIKES WITH HIS BROTHER AND AND HIS FRIENDS. MY MOMMY. IN POLK CITY, ALYX SACKS vlog EIGHT NEWS. IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. EVERY KID DESERVES TO HAVE A BIKE. THAT’S JUST AWESOME. BRIGGS WILL BE VARIETIES YOUTH CHAMPION THIS YEAR AT THE PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC. HE WILL BE RECOGNIZED DURING THE OPENING CEREMONIES TOMORROW. GET A LITTLE WEEPY THINKING ABOUT THIS. SINCE 2007, THE PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC HAS DONATED MORE THAN $1 MILLIO
