Iowa Democrats back Renee Hardman for Senate District 16 seat
Iowa Democrats this week selected West Des Moines City Councilwoman Renee Hardman as their nominee for the special election in Iowa Senate District 16.
It's a seat that was left vacant after the death of state Sen. Claire Celsi earlier this month.
The special election is set for Dec. 30.
"I’m excited for this new opportunity. I certainly will not take anything for granted," Hardman said, adding she plans to sprint across the district in the coming weeks to make her case to voters.
"All of my life, I’ve been a fighter and a force for change," Hardman said. "I’ve worked with marginalized communities, and it’s exciting to be able to take my service to the next level."
Hardman called Celsi a friend and mentor, noting the late senator managed her first city council campaign nearly a decade ago.
"She taught me everything. She taught me how to fill out questionnaires. She was there," Hardman said. "Claire was a fighter, and Claire fought for folks that needed a voice."
Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner said Hardman is prepared to keep the district blue.
"She has eight years of experience in local government," Weiner said. "Not just because she knows about governance and local budgets and all the rest of that, but she knows the nuts and bolts of working with people and governing."
If elected, Hardman said she will prioritize advocating for marginalized communities and those in need, emphasizing collaboration to pass legislation.
"I like to listen, learn and lead, in that order," she said. "That’s how you solve problems. I’m collaborative. I’m a team player."
