SHE SECURED 79% OF THE VOTE IN A SPECIAL ELECTION LAST MONTH TO WIN THE SEAT VACATED BY SAMMY SHEETS. vlog’S OLIVIA TYLER SHOWS US HOW THE NEW LAWMAKER IS MAKING HISTORY TODAY. RAMIREZ IS ONE OF THE STATE’S YOUNGEST REPRESENTATIVES AT 25 YEARS OLD. SHE’S A FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE GRADUATE EARNING DEGREES IN SOCIAL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND POLITICAL SCIENCE FROM COE COLLEGE IN CEDAR RAPIDS. SHE CHOSE TO MAKE THE CITY HER PERMANENT HOME AFTER GRADUATING. RAMIREZ CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF A NONPROFIT SHE CO-FOUNDED FOCUSED ON PUBLIC SERVICE, AND IS A STAFF MEMBER AT MCKINLEY STEAM ACADEMY, METRO HIGH SCHOOL, AND KIDS FIRST LAW CENTER. AS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS, SHE SAYS SHE’S, QUOTE, HEARTBROKEN THAT SHE’S THE FIRST, BUT, QUOTE, HUMBLED THAT SHE WAS CHOSEN TO MAKE SPACE FOR OTHERS IN THE IOWA LEGISLATURE. Linn County Democrat Angel Ramirez, the first Latina elected to the Iowa Legislature, was sworn in Tuesday.Rep. Ramirez, 25, is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and is a first-generation college graduate. She won a special election last month to fill the House District 78 seat vacated by Sami Scheetz, who resigned to serve on the Linn County Board of Supervisors. Ramirez received 2,742 votes in the special election to defeat Republican Bernie Hayes, who received 721 votes.She said she'll fight for the rights of every Iowan. "I'm looking forward to helping make Iowa a safer, more accessible, more welcoming, inclusive place for all," she said. Linn County Democrat Angel Ramirez, the first Latina elected to the Iowa Legislature, was sworn in Tuesday.

Rep. Ramirez, 25, is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and is a first-generation college graduate. She won a special election last month to fill the House District 78 seat vacated by Sami Scheetz, who resigned to serve on the Linn County Board of Supervisors.

She said she'll fight for the rights of every Iowan.
