Rep. Angel Ramirez, first Latina elected to the Iowa Legislature, sworn in
Linn County Democrat Angel Ramirez, the first Latina elected to the Iowa Legislature, was sworn in Tuesday.
Rep. Ramirez, 25, is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and is a first-generation college graduate. She won a special election last month to fill the House District 78 seat vacated by Sami Scheetz, who resigned to serve on the Linn County Board of Supervisors.
Ramirez received 2,742 votes in the special election to defeat Republican Bernie Hayes, who received 721 votes.
She said she'll fight for the rights of every Iowan.
"I'm looking forward to helping make Iowa a safer, more accessible, more welcoming, inclusive place for all," she said. "So that other people can stay here ... and feel like they have a home here — especially the younger generation."
