vlog exclusive: Ron DeSantis launches Faith and Family Coalition with support from two dozen Iowa pastors
UP IN YOUR FULL STORM TEAM 8 FORECAST. SCOTT. THANK YOU, ANN. WELL, TWO DOZEN IOWA PASTORS ARE JOINING A NEW NATIONAL GROUP TO SUPPORT REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RON DESANTIS. vlog CHIEF POLITICAL REPORTER AMANDA ROOKER BAUER WAS THE FIRST TO BREAK THIS NEWS. SO, AMANDA, HOW COULD IOWA’S FAITH COMMUNITY TIP THE SCALES HERE? WELL, SCOTT, THE EVANGELICAL COMMUNITY IS SUCH AN INCREDIBLY SIGNIFICANT GROUP IN IOWA. LOOKING AT 2016, ENTRANCE POLLS FOUND ALMOST MORE ALMOST TWO THIRDS OF REPUBLICAN CAUCUS GOERS WERE EVANGELICALS. AND FOR DECADES, THE SUPPORT OF BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS HAS OFTEN BEEN A DECIDING FACTOR IN WHO WINS. IOWA’S CAUCUSES. AND AGAIN, IT COULD PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN 2024. MANY PASTORS HERE IN IOWA HOPE THE FAITH COMMUNITY HERE WILL RALLY AROUND RON DESANTIS. FLORIDA GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS IS RECRUITING PASTORS ACROSS THE STATE AND THE COUNTRY TO CAMPAIGN IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. HAVING A COALITION OF IOWA PASTORS, WHAT IMPACT IS THAT GOING TO HAVE OF FOR GOVERNOR DESANTIS IN IOWA? I’M HOPING THAT IT WILL HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT. PASTORS LIKE JEREMY HIGGINS, WHO LEADS CALVARY COMMUNITY CHURCH IN CEDAR RAPIDS. I THINK THAT WE CAN TURN THE TIDE. BUT DESANTIS ISN’T THE ONLY CANDIDATE PUTTING A FOCUS ON FAITH. SOUTH CAROLINA SENATOR TIM SCOTT AND FORMER VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE HAVE BOTH SHARED THEIR TESTIMONY AT TOWN HALLS AND MADE CLEAR THEIR CHRISTIAN VALUES. BUT HIGGINS IS SOLD ON DESANTIS. FOR ME, IT’S MORE THAN JUST A CENTRAL COMPONENT OF A CAMPAIGN. YOU KNOW, SOMETHING THAT’S PUT ON FLIERS OR BILLBOARDS. UM, YOU KNOW, I’VE HAD A CONVERSATION ACTUALLY A COUPLE WITH GOVERNOR DESANTIS AND I BELIEVE THAT, YOU KNOW, HE AND HIS WIFE BOTH HAVE A STRONG FAITH BASE. vlog ASKED DESANTIS ABOUT HIS FAITH IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW IN MAY. FAITH IS A VERY IMPORTANT VALUE TO MANY IOWANS. HOW DOES FAITH PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE AND HOW DOES IT INFORM THE DECISIONS THAT YOU MAKE AS GOVERNOR AND THE DECISIONS THAT YOU WOULD MAKE IF YOU WERE ELECTED PRESIDENT? WELL, IT’S A FOUNDATION FOR MY WIFE AND I AS PARENTS. CERTAINLY FOUNDATIONAL TO THE VALUES THAT WE’RE RAISING OUR THREE CHILDREN WITH. WE HAVE A SIX, A FIVE AND A THREE YEAR OLD. AND I THINK IT GIVES YOU, AS A PUBLIC OFFICIAL, THE FOUNDATION TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A TRUE NORTH OUT THERE. GRINNELL PASTOR JOHN DUNWELL SAYS THE COALITION WILL HELP IOWANS SEE DESANTIS, HIS FAITH IN ACTION AND WILL HELP HIM TO3 SHEPHERD THE FLORIDA GOVERNOR ON HIS RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE. THIS MAN HAS OPENED HIMSELF UP FOR ME TO HAVE AN INFLUENCE IN HIS LIFE, AND I’M GOING TO TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR A LEADER WHO’S THAT OPEN AND SAYS, HEY, I WANT PASTORS PRAYING FOR ME. I WANT PASTORS SPEAKING TO ME. I WANT PEOPLE ENGAGING WITH ME ON THE IMPORTANT ISSUES AND HAVING A SEAT AT THAT TABLE. AND THAT’S WHAT I LOVE. AND BOTH OF THOSE PASTORS AND RON DESANTIS WILL BE IN DES MOINES ON SATURDAY TO OFFICIALLY LAUNCH THAT FAITH AND FAMILY COALITION. DESANTIS IS EXPECTED TO TALK MORE ABOUT HIS OWN PERSONAL FAITH JOURNE

vlog exclusive: Ron DeSantis launches Faith and Family Coalition with support from two dozen Iowa pastors
In an effort to rally Iowa's faith community and evangelical voters across the country, Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is bringing together a national campaign coalition of pastors.vlog was the first to report that DeSantis will launch his Faith and Family Coalition in Des Moines on Saturday. The coalition includes two dozen Iowa pastors from 18 counties across the state, along with pastors from across the country. The operation comes as presidential candidates work to win over faith leaders and evangelical voters in Iowa. In 2016, entrance polls found more than two-thirds of Republican caucusgoers self-identified as evangelicals. For decades, the support of conservative Christians has often been a deciding factor in who wins the caucuses. That support could again play a major role in 2024. Several Iowa pastors hope the new DeSantis coalition will lead the state's faith community to rally around DeSantis. Jeremy Higgins, the lead pastor at Calvary Community Church in Cedar Rapids, hopes that if Iowa pastors "go out of their way to engage with their community, engage with other pastors in their community," they can "turn the tide" for DeSantis. The most recent Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll, released in late August, found DeSantis 23 percentage points behind frontrunner Donald Trump in Iowa. However, with four months until the Iowa caucuses, state Representative and Grinnell pastor Jon Dunwell argues there's still time for DeSantis to overcome Trump's lead."That's where we play a role in reminding people, polls are polls, and it's a long ways yet," Dunwell said.Dunwell will speak at the coalition launch in Des Moines on Saturday. After meeting with DeSantis and his wife Casey, Dunwell said he was encouraged by the governor's conservative record and believes his actions exemplify spiritual character."This man has opened himself up for me to have an influence in his life, and I'm going to take every opportunity for a leader who's that open and says, 'Hey, I want pastors praying for me. I want pastors speaking to me. I want people in engaging with me on important issues and having a seat at that table,'" Dunwell said. "That's what I love."DeSantis spoke about his faith with vlog in an exclusive, one-on-one interview shortly after launching his official campaign in May."It's a foundation for my wife and I as parents, certainly foundational to the values that we're raising our three children with," DeSantis said. "And I think it gives you, as a public official, the foundation to understand that, you know, there is a true North out there." He'll share more about his personal faith journey and platform on defending religious freedom and a "culture of life" in Iowa on Saturday, according to the DeSantis campaign.More from vlog: Coffee with the Candidates seriesvlog's Coffee with the Candidates series launched Sept. 7, 2023, with chief political reporter Amanda Rooker interviewing former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson. We have invitations out to the rest of the top-10 polling Republican candidates for president, and the second installment will be with Mike Pence on Sept. 14.
