Rossen Reports: IRS announces new rules to get stimulus money
The IRS is now saying there have been some mistakes made in getting stimulus payments out.
Millions of people are checking the “Get My Payment” tool on the website and seeing the message “Payment Status #2 – Not Available.”
So what happened?
The IRS was in a rush to get the payments out by Jan. 15. Payments were then sent to bank accounts that are closed or no longer active. This happened to some that used tax preparation services. Tax preparation companies sometimes set up temporary accounts for people when they prepare returns. This will happen for people who choose to have preparation fees deducted from their refund. After you get your money, the account is closed but could still be linked in the IRS records.
What’s being done to fix it?
Payments that can’t be processed must be returned to the Treasury. Tax preparation companies say they are trying to work with the IRS to get those payments to you automatically.
- says they expect to have corrected the problem and will begin depositing money into the correct accounts within days. On the website, TurboTax gives for you to keep updated on your payment.

What you may need to do.
Check your status on the “” tool first. If it was sent to an unfamiliar account, it could be one of those temporary accounts. If you get the “Not Available” message, that means your payment isn’t coming just yet. Right now, it’s a waiting game. No matter what, these payments will be delayed.
If you don’t get your $600 payment by the time you file your taxes, you’ll need to take action yourself to get that money:
- File your taxes electronically.
- Make sure you have updated bank account information.
- Claim the on your tax return.
