Rossen Reports: Putting TSA wait times to the test
Updated: 3:20 PM CDT Jul 15, 2021
Hi did you know the T. S. A. Has an app? It's free and tells you how long the lines are at every airport in the country down to each individual terminal and whether the T. S. A. Pre lines are open or closed that way you know when to leave your house. But is it accurate? Yeah I was wondering that too. You know the drill were fanning out to test it. Let's go airports everywhere experiencing T. S. A. Shortage is the T. S. A. Says is trying to hire thousands of workers this summer to get you through the lines faster. But this app called the my T. S. A. App might save you the agony of waiting. Okay so here's what we're doing. We are testing airports across the country. I am in new york right now at Laguardia Airport New york city obviously a very popular tourist destination. You're gonna want to know what the airport is like here and whether that app from the T. S. A. Is accurate. But we also have our amazing journalist from our her stations fanned out in their cities to tell us what they're seeing From Baltimore to savannah, Georgia and Orlando florida. In fact, let's start there, paul Rivera from Wesh in Orlando. What are you seeing paul? We've got the mighty esa. I pulled up currently. It's telling a 0 to 15 minutes to get through it all. So we're going to compare it from Orlando, see how well it stacks up. Come along with us. Let's go wait in line, Paul Hops in line and right away breezes through in just 6:43. It's accurate in Orlando. Now let's head to Oklahoma city with koc. Oh, Zach real! All right, let's go check it out. Once through the screening, he puts on his shoes and hit stop on the timer. That's it. Four minutes and 18 seconds. That's amazing. All right now to savannah Georgia. DNA Bucci from our her station W. J. C. L. What you see him? All right. So we have the T. S. A. And it says it's going to take just 15 minutes to get through the security lines and we'll see how accurate that is. Her wait a little longer than the others. So it took 10 minutes to get through the security checkpoint, which was well within the range. The PSA Davis. So it was a successful experiment here in Savannah heading to Baltimore Amy Lou with W. B. A. L. At the airport there and it looks busier than everyone else is. Now that we are standing here. I'm actually gonna start our clock. The app tells her the weight is longer to 15 to 30 minutes. Alright, here we go. She makes it through in just under 20 minutes. The app was accurate here, but it's not smooth sailing for my producer kelly. She went to one of the busiest hubs in the world, Atlanta Hartsfield, no matter where you go, you may have to pass through here. The app says a 15 to 30 minute wait to snake through all those lines And she immediately hits a standstill so they have a room for about 18 T. S. A. agents I think if I'm seeing enough of the science about 18, but they only have about half of them fall, so they're definitely not all there. It takes Kelly nearly 33 minutes to get through just a little longer than the upset. But out of everyone, My experience at New York's Laguardia have the most problems. The opposing only 0-15 minutes. But this is a big line here in new york, I start the timer and get in line. But as I'm waiting, I noticed the app is already wrong about something. It says very clearly that the T. S. A. Lines for T. S. A. Pre are open and for people with T. S. A. Pre should take less than five minutes to get through. I'm T. S. A. Pre the T. S. A. Pre lines are not open. Right? Are you a U. S. A. T. S. A. Pre the pre lines open. It's awful. No, I finally get through, put my bag on the belt and the final verdict. So I just went through security and let's see what the final time is. Here we go. 22 minutes and 15 seconds. So there you go. That's how long it took me in security. The app was a few minutes off the T. S. A. Telling rossen reports what you see on the app our historical wait times from a set date range and should be used as a tool noting the app does not provide live wait time data. As for my issue with the pre check line. The T. S. A. Telling us those hours are subject to change based on operational needs a big thank you to all of our great her stations. We want to keep tabs on this for you. If you're heading to the airport, do me a favor, download the mighty esa app again. It's free. Let us know what the wait time is really like and what it's like compared to the app posted on my ross and reports facebook page or on twitter with the hashtag ross and reports. We'll keep each other informed as we travel this summer back to you.
Rossen Reports: Putting TSA wait times to the test
Updated: 3:20 PM CDT Jul 15, 2021
Summer travel is surging and airports are catching the brunt of it. The Transportation Security Administration is experiencing a shortage of workers, saying they’ve been trying to hire thousands of workers over the last few months and plan to hire a couple thousand more by the end of September. With fewer screeners at the airport, you’ll be seeing longer security lines, and it might get worse before it gets better. But there's an app that will measure the TSA line and give you an approximate wait time before you even leave your house. Could it cut down on stress and kick off your summer vacation the right way? WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Our Chief National Consumer Correspondent Jeff Rossen is teaming up with journalists from our Hearst stations across the country. They’re hitting local airports with the MyTSA app in hand to see if it’s really accurate.
