ONE OF THE ATHLETES WHO WE'RE CLOSELY WATCHING ON THE ROAD TO THE WINTER OLYMPICS IS RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE OF VERMONT. HE EMERGED AS A BIG STAR ON TEAM USA'S ALPINE SKI TEAM DURING THE 2022 GAMES -- WINNING SILVER! TEAM USA IS EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE ITS OLYMPIC SKI LINEUP IN JANUARY. COCHRAN-SIEGLE HOPES HE'LL BE COMPETING IN MILAN-CORTINA. giving him a chance to go FOR áGOLD. JACK THURSTON CAUGHT UP WITH HIM BEFORE HE HEADED OUT FOR A TRAINING CAMP ON THE GLACIERS OF AUSTRIA. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: This is where it all began.> The scenic hills of Richmond, Vermont are where Ryan Cochran- Siegle feels most at home. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: It is a special place.> It's where his grandparents built a community destination called Cochran's. <sound of skiing from file> Countless kids have learned to ski here, and learned to love ski racing. <sound of skiing from file> It's also the home base for their famous family of Olympians. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: That's my mom that's my mom.> Cochran-Siegle's mom, Barbara Ann won slalom gold in 1972 -- one of six Cochrans to compete in Olympic Games -- and her skis are still on display in the lodge. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: It's pretty much ready for snowmaking once the temps drop enough.> Cochran-Siegle comes here in the temps drop enough.> Cochran-Siegle comes here in the off-season -- <sound of dog barking> with his very vocal dog, Wrigley <sound of dog barking> to find peace in the outdoors. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: Just enjoying the time that we have here at home is special to me and I try to take advantage of that.> Calm will soon become a rare commodity, with the alpine ski racer about to begin his climb to a áthird Winter Olympics. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: The race season is right around the corner.> He won silver at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing -- in the Super G, the discipline that combines downhill speed with the precise turns of giant slalom. <sound of parade> After that podium performance, Vermonters hailed him as a returning hero <sound of parade> with a huge homecoming parade through Richmond. <sound of parade> <JACK THURSTON: What would look good with a silver medal is a gold medal. RYAN COCHRAN-SIEGLE: A gold medal, absolutely! That is, I would say, my biggest goal this season.> <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: It's lofty in certain terms, but I think you have to believe, especially this point in the season, going into it, that that's what I'm shooting for, so we'll see.> He tells us he's working really hard to put himself in the best position to make that goal attainable: keeping up with strength workouts and traveling to training camps this summer in South America. Another camp in Europe is on the docket before the World Cup schedule picks up on Thanksgiving. <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: Schedule gets pretty busy, especially leading up to the Olympics. It's exciting but it's a little bit stressful too.> <JACK THURSTON: Is it still fun, or does it feel like work? RYAN COCHRAN-SIEGLE: There are absolutely moments that are still fun.> <RYAN COCHRAN- SIEGLE: Every day I do try to find joy and happiness, because ultimately that is what's driving me. An alpine ski racer from Vermont who won silver in the 2022 Winter Olympics is preparing for another season, hoping to return to the Olympic stage and secure gold for Team USA at the upcoming Winter Games in Milan-Cortina. "Just enjoying the time that we have here at home is special to me, and I try to take advantage of that," Ryan Cochran-Siegle said in an interview with Hearst sister station WPTZ, conducted in Vermont ahead of his departure for a training camp on the glaciers of Austria.Cochran-Siegle has ski racing in his blood.
