Labor Day sales are kicking off, offering a prime opportunity to save on big-ticket items. But how do you know which deals are actually worth your hard-earned cash?
We asked Jessica Teich, the director of editorial commerce and product reviews at .
"We test thousands of products, and our lab testing experts find the best products to buy, and then our deal-finding experts find the best time to buy them," Teich said.
Ready to shop? Here's where she says you can find the steepest savings.
Summer gear
"Labor Day is your last and best chance to get summer appliances on sale," Teich said. Look for deals on things like grills, air conditioners, and air purifiers, though inventory may be limited compared to earlier in the year.
Large appliances
"Brands tend to release new large appliances in September and October, so before those launches, we need to get rid of the old inventory from last year," Teich said. Expect to find deals on last year's washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
Outdoor furniture and patio decor
Just like appliances, look for deep discounts on outdoor gear as retailers look to sell out their inventory. "All of that inventory is about to be cleared out to make room for fall," Teich said.
Back-to-school clothing
Labor Day is typically when we see the last big sale for back-to-school clothing. "Really think about what your kid might be wearing in the next month or two while it's season-appropriate," Teich said. "Shorts, T-shirts, anything that's a little bit cooler for those first weeks of the year, or even for early next year, instead of those heavier sweaters and long pants and shoes."
Apple products
"Apple, very rarely, almost never, does a sale in store, but there's one exception, and that is right now," Teich said. Through Sept. 30, Apple is offering a bundle on eligible purchases, like iPads and MacBooks, made through its . Pair that purchase with an added accessory, like AirPods or a Magic Keyboard, for up to $199 in additional savings — essentially making most qualifying accessories free.
If you don't qualify for the education discount, or you don't need the bonus accessory, check prices on Amazon and Best Buy — we found even lower prices on Apple products there.
What else to know
Teich advises shopping between Thursday and Monday of Labor Day weekend to snag the best deals — just make sure you're shopping around and checking prices across retailers.
