Couple face first-degree murder charges in Sabrina Ray's death
The adoptive parents of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray were charged with first-degree murder Wednesday, nearly five months after her death in which medical examiners said was caused by severe malnutrition.
Misty Ray, 40, and her husband, Marc Ray, were arrested in May after Sabrina was found dead May 12 in their Perry home. She weighed just 56 pounds at the time of her death.
The Rays, who owned an in-home day care, were initially charged with child endangerment resulting in death, along with seven other child endangerment and negligence counts.
Court documents also reveal that Marc Ray was charged with one count of second-degree sexual abuse for a child under 12 and one count of third-degree sexual abuse for a person 12 or 13 years old, though the charges were not related to Sabrina’s death.
THE NIGHT SABRINA DIED
Recently released search warrants show that Sabrina and two of her siblings were with their cousin, Josie Bousman, 20, who also lives at the home and is charged in the Perry teenager’s death.
Bousman tried to give Sabrina water just before she became unresponsive, court documents indicate. Sabrina then became “cold to the touch.” Bousman called her grandmother, Carla Bousman, 62, who arrived at the house to help revive Sabrina.
It took about 10 minutes until they called 911. The Bousmans realized the girl was dead, so they called Marc and Misty Ray, who were in Nashville, Tennessee, with another suspect in the case, Justin Ray, 21, visiting family members and friends.
Marc Ray told police that his wife discarded the family’s cellphones as soon as she learned of Sabrina’s death, according to court documents.
When police arrived at the home, they noticed Sabrina had suffered “unreasonable force, torture and cruelty,” according to court documents.
Authorities also seized several computers since the Rays used them to message the parents of the children they watched at their in-home day care, court documents charge.
Marc and Misty Ray were arrested and booked into the Dallas County Jail in lieu of $1 million cash-only bail.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Five family members were charged in connection with Sabrina’s death: Misty, Marc and Justin Ray, as well as Josie and Carla Bousman.
Justin Ray, Sabrina’s 21-year-old brother, also lived in the Perry home. He allegedly “drop-kicked” Sabrina down the basement staircase, causing her to land on the basement floor, according to court documents. He then started kicking her in the face.
Sabrina suffered serious injuries and couldn’t walk, talk, eat or drink following the abuse. The incident happened sometime between March 1 and May 12.
He has been charged with two felony counts of willful injury and two felony counts of child endangerment.
The Rays’ 20-year-old niece, Josie Bousman, also lived in the home.
Court documents reveal she admitted to taking part in holding Sabrina and two other girls against their will in the home and participated in denying Sabrina of food and water.
She has been charged with three counts of aiding and abetting first-degree kidnapping, and one count of aiding and abetting child endangerment causing death.
Carla Bousman is accused of confining Sabrina and two other girls in the home.
She has been charged with three counts of aiding and abetting first-degree kidnapping, one count of aiding and abetting child endangerment causing death and one count of obstructing prosecution or defense in the case.
Sabrina’s death has drawn comparisons to the starvation death of 16-year-old Natalie Finn, of West Des Moines, last October. Like Sabrina, Natalie went through the state's foster care and adoption system. Her parents, Nicole Finn and Joseph Finn II, were charged in her death and the suspected abuse of two of Natalie's siblings.
