Stacey Horst recounts reporting on the east coast during 9/11 attacks
It's stunning to me that it's been 20 years since that awful day. It was a beautiful day, gorgeous weather and it didn't seem like it was the appropriate backdrop for the horrible thing that had happened in pennsylvania and Washington D. C. And new york. Mhm. I was working for a television station in Charlottesville Virginia on 9 11, two hours south of the Pentagon. It was a scary day. A scary time for everyone. We didn't know what was happening. We didn't know what was going to happen next. We sent a reporter and a photographer to the pentagon to cover that part of the story. And when they returned, yeah, you could just see it on their face and they told us that what we are seeing on television couldn't even capture the extent of the damage that you see in person. People were scared, People were quiet. The silence was almost deafening.
