A singer and songwriter from Des Moines is looking for her big break in the Big Apple. Sharane Calister will perform at the Apollo Theater later this month. Calister's video submission of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" earned her an invitation to the theater's Amateur Night. The iconic theater is known as the place where "stars are born and legends are made," catapulting legendary artists like Lauryn Hill, Luther Vandross and The Jackson 5 to fame. "I'm just so excited because this is like a dream come true. It's something I've always wanted, even since I was a little kid," she smiles. "Before 'American Idol,' before 'The Voice,' before 'America's Got Talent,' there was the Apollo stage, and people are forgetting that."Calister says she's both excited and nervous to perform, but says she's trusting the timing of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This isn't Calister's first time in the spotlight. She was a contestant on NBC's "The Voice" in 2018. This time on stage, she will sing a song by British pop, soul and R&B artist Adele that she hopes will win over the crowd."It has good emotion, and the way my voice resonates with people, I feel like it's going to be perfect," she said.Calister will perform in New York on May 28. The winner of Amateur Night takes home $20,000. If she wins, the Des Moines native says she will put it towards schooling, giving back to the community and of course her music. "Even if I don't win, I'm okay just stepping foot on the state and just even getting the invitation to be there is enough for me.
