THE SIMPSON COLLEGE COMMUNITY IS STILL MOURNING THE LOSS OF THEIR PRESIDENT JAY BYERS WHO DIED EARLIER THIS MONTH. One of the softball parents had an idea, and now a couple of teams are MAKING SURE Byers remains a fixture on the field. vlog's Jeff Dubrof has the story. <SIMPSON PRESIDENT JAY BYERS MADE SURE TO NEVER MISS A MOMENT THAT MEANT ATTENDING NEARLY EVERY SINGLE SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL. SO IT'S ONLY FITTING THAT THE TWO TEAMS FOUND A WAY TO REMEMBER HIM IN THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE WAY POSSIBLE... NOT INITIALS... NOT A NUMBER... BUT A BOW TIE. An iconic look. <KATIE SHANER- SIMPSON SOPHOMORE-the only way you can desribe President Byers is Simpson community. <NATHAN ROLING SIMPSON BASEBALL COACH-He's taller than most so you could always see him in the crowd with the bow tie.> is now a part of the simpson baseball and softball uniform. A bowtie sticker on the back of every players helmet. <Everybody knows when they see the bowtie that's what it represents.> It represents the team's number one supporter. <BRENT MATTHIAS- SOFTBALL HEAD COACH-he was a fan. He was a fan of these students win at things. in the class room on the ball field.> winning on the field is exactly what the softball team is doing... the team is 30-6. And What happened during our interview with head softball coach Brent Matthias... was astounding. Players started celebrating out of nowhere. the reason why... <BRENT MATTHIAS-we made a deal with him that we were going to win a conference championship and put it on his desk and he was so excited about that and you hear people cheering in the background because we just found out that we won the conference championship that's why people are cheering and it's kind of emotional right now because now the bow ties are so much bigger than a sticker it means everything in our hearts to him.> And a deal's a deal. <Tomorrow we'll put the trophy on his desk and take pictures and we're going to celebrate just like he would want us to cele

Simpson College baseball and softball players are honoring their late school president with special helmet stickers. Jay Byers died at age 54 this month after about two years leading the school. The 1993 Simpson graduate, who spent years as CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership before returning to the Indianola college, was rarely seen without his signature bow tie. So it's fitting that Storm baseball and softball players will play out the season with bow tie stickers on the back of their helmets."The only way you could describe President Byers was through his bow tie," said sophomore softball player Katie Shaner. "He always wore it."It was Shaner's dad who pitched the idea of the stickers to softball coach Brent Matthias. Simpson College baseball and softball players are honoring their late school president with special helmet stickers.

Jay Byers died at age 54 this month after about two years leading the school. The 1993 Simpson graduate, who spent years as CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership before returning to the Indianola college, was rarely seen without his signature bow tie.

So it's fitting that Storm baseball and softball players will play out the season with bow tie stickers on the back of their helmets.

"The only way you could describe President Byers was through his bow tie," said sophomore softball player Katie Shaner. "He always wore it."
