This Day in History: Disneyland opens in 1955
On this day in 1955, “The Happiest Place on Earth,” Disneyland, opened to the public.
Walt Disney came up with the idea for the park after visiting famous amusement parks with his daughters in the 1930s and 1940s.
Disney began designing the park in the early 1950s, with the intention for it to have educational and entertainment value for children and adults.
Construction began on a 160-acre site in Anaheim, California, in 1954, and the park was unveiled during a special televised press event on the ABC network a year later.
