Ottumwa man charged with attempted murder after stabbing
An Ottumwa man is facing up to 50 years in prison after allegedly stabbing another man over the weekend.
Ottumwa police say they responded to a stabbing at 1600 Stellar Ave. around 7:30 a.m. Saturday. There, they found 20-year-old Marshaun Carlvin of Ottumwa with multiple stab wounds.
Carlvin was taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to a Des Moines hospital for treatment. He has since been released from the hospital.
The suspect, 29-year-old Trinity Allen Shafer of Ottumwa, was taken into custody during a traffic stop around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Shafer is charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, as well as possession of methamphetamine, a Class D felony. He also had two outstanding warrants for probation violation and failure to appear.
He is being held without bond in the Wapello County Jail.
The criminal complaint says Shafer initiated a physical confrontation with Carlvin because he believed Carlvin was talking to Shafer's girlfriend. During the altercation, the complaint says, Shafer pulled out a knife and stabbed Carlvin three times in the arm and abdomen.
Shafer is also listed on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry for a 2019 conviction of dissemination and exhibition of obscene material to minors.
