President Donald Trump is set to meet with European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on Sunday about a possible trade deal, just days before his Friday deadline for imposing steeper tariffs on the bloc of 27 nations.
"With the European Union, I think we have a good 50/50 chance; that’s a lot," Trump told reporters on Friday. "I don't want to tell you what the sticking points are, but the sticking points are having to do with maybe about 20 different things."
Von der Leyen posted on social media Friday, "Following a good call with @POTUS, we have agreed to meet in Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong."
The future is uncertain. Earlier this month, there were public signals that a deal with the EU may have been close, but then Trump sent a letter threatening to increase tariffs on the region to 30% starting Aug. 1. A slew of other countries could see increased import taxes take effect on the same date if agreements aren't reached before then.
Trump's goal is to address trade imbalances, but economists warn that tariffs could increase prices on a range of foreign products. The EU has also prepared retaliatory measures on hundreds of American products in case negotiations fail.
Sunday's meeting is one of several planned for Trump during a trip that combines politics and golf in Scotland, where the president's family is opening a new golf course.
Trump is also scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday. The meeting is likely to focus on other matters, such as wars in Gaza and Ukraine, as Trump has stated that his trade deal with the U.K. is done.
