Trump dismisses recession fears amid economic uncertainty
President Donald Trump is downplaying concerns about a potential recession after the U.S. economy saw its first drop in GDP in years, as he emphasized a transition period and long-term goals during an interview set to air Sunday.During an interview for Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, Trump was asked if he was "comfortable with the country potentially dipping into a recession for a period of time" to achieve his long-term goals. Trump said, "Look, yeah, it's — everything's OK. What we are — I said, this is a transition period. I think we're going to do fantastically."Despite new signs of uncertainty in the economy, Trump stands by his tariff policies. Data released Wednesday showed the U.S. economy shrank for the first time in three years in the first quarter, and consumer confidence is falling. However, this was followed by a stronger-than-expected jobs report, showing employers added 177,000 jobs in April. Earlier this week, Trump said the short-term pain will be worth it as he aims to spur more domestic manufacturing and more jobs."Somebody said, 'Oh, the shelves are going to be open.' Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know? And maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally," Trump said.Trump spent Saturday at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, without any public events on his schedule. He is scheduled to return to Washington Sunday night.
