Hundreds of sea turtles have been rescued by volunteers at the South Padre Island Convention Centre in Texas after frigid temperatures shocked the Gulf Coast. According to the Turtle Island Restoration Network, sea turtles rely on external sources of heat to maintain their body temperatures. When temperatures in the water reach 50 degrees or below, turtles are cold-stunned. This means they are more subject to shock, pneumonia, frostbite and potentially death. Currently, hundreds of sea turtles are being kept in dry tubs, where they will be slowly warming until they can successfully migrate to warmer waters, officials with the Convention Centre say. Hundreds more were expected to arrive at the facility later Tuesday. Volunteers from Sea Turtle, Inc. are assisting with the turtle rescues.
