Man charged with statutory rape after missing West Des Moines teen was found in Tennessee
A Tennessee man is charged with statutory rape after he was identified as the person who took a 13-year-old West Des Moines girl out of state.
West Des Moines police initially asked for the public’s help Monday in finding a 13-year-old girl who had last been seen Saturday. She was later found in Tennessee Monday night.
The family arrived back home with the 13-year-old Wednesday afternoon. Her father spoke to vlog about how he felt knowing his child is home.
"It feels surreal. Most families don't make it back with their children, and we're just so grateful for the help from law enforcement, the community. We had people all over the country working this, so we're thankful for everybody. We couldn't ask for a better support system," her father said.
The family and community leaders who assisted with the girl's return said they hope this case serves as a warning to other families and inspires action from the community to prevent future situations like it.
"This is about action now," former Iowa State representative Ako Abdul-Samad said. "We have a family that's willing to speak out and say something, we have community leaders that are willing to step up, speak out. It's time to educate our own community now."
Once the teen was found, police say they were still investigating her absence and did not believe she went to Tennessee alone. A suspect was identified Wednesday.
Martin Sandoval Jr., 37, of New Market, Tennessee, was taken into custody.
Investigators say Sandoval and the 13-year-old victim communicated on social media before Sandoval drove 13 hours to West Des Moines to pick up the victim and take her back to Jefferson County, Tennessee. The investigation also revealed "sexual encounters" between Sandoval and the victim.
Sandoval is charged with four counts of aggravated statutory rape.
