Why doesn't Iowa have 100 counties?
SKY CAM IN ALGONA. ALWAYS THIS SHOT OF DOWNTOWN. YOU SEE THE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AND EVERYTHING. THIS IS THE COUNTY SEAT OF KOSSUTH COUNTY IN NORTHERN IOWA. NOW, YOU CAN SEE ALL 99 OF IOWA’S COUNTIES ON THIS MAP. FEELS LIKE IT’S 30 YEARS AGO AND I’M DOING ONE BECAUSE SO IS THE LARGEST BY FAR IN TERMS OF SIZE. IT’S GIANT. AND THAT CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF A VIRAL TWITTER ACCOUNT CALLED TERRIBLE MAPS, WHICH THIS WEEK TWEETED, IOWA HAS 99 COUNTIES. IT COULD HAVE HAD AN EVEN 100 IF NOT FOR THIS MONSTROSITY. THAT TWEET HAS THOUSANDS OF LIKES AND RETWEETS. SO WE DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND WE LEARNED THAT IOWA DID IT ONE TIME. YEAH. HAVE 100 COUNTIES. THE NORTHERN PORTION OF COSGROVE COUNTY. AND WE’RE GOING TO WRITE THERE WAS ONE CALLED BANCROFT. IT’S HIGHLIGHT THERE AND READ. IT INCLUDED WHAT ARE NOW THE TOWNS OF BANCROFT, SWAY CITY AND LEDYARD, TO NAME A FEW. BUT BY 1855, IT HAD NO SETTLERS ORGANIZED GOVERNMENT. SO THE STATE LEGISLATURE UNITED IT TO MAKE CSU’S COUNTY BIGGER. ALL RIGHT. STATE TWICE PROPOSED FORMING A COUNTY IN THE NORTHERN PORTION OF IT.
