Witness says driver and passenger tried to cover up involvement in hayrack ride crash
Emotional testimony took center stage in the trial of former Keokuk County Sheriff’s Deputy David Heady, who is accused of being intoxicated and attempting to cover up his involvement in a 2023 hayride crash that injured several middle school students.
The driver of the hayrack ride, Daniel Brubaker, has already pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges.
The crash occurred during a Halloween party organized by the Heady family. Witnesses testified that alcohol, including Busch Light and Fireball, was consumed by some adults at the event, including Brubaker. College student Reanna Robb, who was helping with the party, described the chaotic aftermath of the crash.
She testified that instead of assisting the injured children, Heady and Brubaker were discussing how to explain the incident to investigators.
Parents of the injured children also took the stand, sharing the anguish they felt upon receiving frantic calls from their kids. Staci White teared up as she described the moment her son called her from the crash site.
The children themselves spoke about the lasting emotional scars they carry nearly two years later. One child shared how the crash left her with anxiety, making it difficult to travel on gravel roads or feel safe in a car. Another described the haunting memories of the incident, saying, “I just hear sirens in my head.”
The defense has yet to call any witnesses — they won't get that opportunity until the prosecution finishes — but they argued in their opening statement that Heady bears no responsibility for the crash, placing the blame solely on Brubaker.
