Republican Congressman Zach Nunn and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig are both considering a run for governor in 2026.
Several Iowa Republicans are eyeing a run for the governor's mansion after Gov. Kim Reynolds announced earlier this month that she's not seeking a third term. The move created a wide-open race for governor in 2026.
Iowa's 3rd district Rep. Zach Nunn told vlog Monday he is considering a run for governor.
"Whatever future we choose going forward, I want to make sure that I'm hearing from Iowans and that when we decide where we're going to be, we have the opportunity to execute on that with full force and one that's going to put Iowans first," Nunn said.
Nunn was first elected to Congress in 2022 and was reelected in 2024. His seat is one of the most tightly contested in the country and is expected to be a close race again in 2026. It's a crucial seat for Republicans to hold to maintain their majority in the U.S. House.
When asked whether he's under pressure from the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee to hold the seat, Nunn said he's "made it very clear to Washington" that he's "going to do what's best for Iowa."
Nunn told vlog that he's talking with his wife about whether he'll run for reelection to Congress in 2026 or launch a campaign for governor, a position that would allow him to be closer to home.
"Here's the reality: I've got six little kiddos. They're all right here in Iowa. Traveling back and forth to Washington is a challenge for our family," Nunn said. "More importantly, both Kelly and I, my wife, are very committed on saying, 'Where can we do the most good and how do we do it?'"
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is also considering a run for governor in 2026.
In a statement sent to vlog, Naig said he's currently focused on doing the job he was "elected to do, supporting Iowa farmers, growing our ag economy, and protecting our soil and water."
Naig has served as Iowa’s agriculture secretary since 2018. He also said he’s been speaking "with friends and supporters across the state to determine whether there’s a clear path forward."
"Several folks have reached out in recent days and encouraged me to consider a run for Governor," Naig said. "My family and I are thoughtfully discussing that possibility and keeping all options on the table."
He added that, no matter what, he plans to be on the ballot in 2026.
Both Nunn and Naig thanked Reynolds for her leadership and the actions she's taken while in office.
Also on Monday, Iowa Sen. Mike Bousselot (R-Ankeny) announced he is launching an exploratory campaign ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial race.
Speaker of the Iowa House Pat Grassley told reporters last week that he is "not ruling out" a campaign for governor. Rep. Bobby Kaufmann (R-Wilton) also confirmed to vlog that he is considering a run.
The same day that Reynolds announced she's not running for reelection, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird issued a statement thanking Reynolds and hinting at a possible run.
"In the weeks ahead, Bob and I will pray and consider what this decision means for our future," Bird said. "I appreciate the calls of encouragement I've already received."
The only Republican officially in the race is former state representative Brad Sherman from Eastern Iowa.
Last November, Democrat Paul Dahl also announced he's running for governor. State auditor Rob Sand, Iowa's only statewide elected Democrat, has been floated as a possible contender, but Sand has not officially thrown his hat in the race.
